Book your next trip with Smokin’ Reels Fishing Charters and find out what keeps anglers coming back to Jacksonville for more. Having logged many hours on these tides, Captain Michael can tell you all about the local fishery.
There’s no guarantee when you’re fishing, but just some of the species you can catch around here include Amberjack, Cobia, Mahi Mahi, Black Grouper, Gag Grouper, Red Grouper, Scamp Grouper, Almaco Jack, Mackerel, Sailfish, Black Seabass, and more. Depending on the species you’re after, you may find yourself fishing with heavy tackle, trolling, jigging, bottom fishing, or maybe something more specialized in this area.
Planning a family adventure? Kids are absolutely welcome! Children must wear life vests, so find out if the appropriate size is available on board. Also, remember to bring snacks for a boost of energy when needed!
Your day begins aboard a 33’ Hydra-Sport center console with a capacity for 6 passengers. It comes with outriggers, downriggers, and all the essentials. There’s a toilet on board for your convenience. Rods, reels, and tackle are included, as well as lures. Live bait is included, but be sure to ask about it so you know if you’ll be catching it yourself.
Trips are run with the help of a First Mate. It’s customary to tip the Mate 10–20% to show your appreciation.
There’s no need to buy a fishing license, just show up ready for a good time! Keep in mind that some fish may have harvest limits or closed seasons. Simply ask and your captain can tell you more.
You can’t go wrong when you bring sunglasses, sunblock (non-spray), and bottled water. Alcohol is allowed in moderation, so long as you avoid hard liquor as well as glass bottles.
Now, come aboard with Smokin’ Reels Fishing Charters and get hooked!

7 Hour Trip – Nearshore
Admittedly I did not appreciate being told by Captain Michael how surprised he was at how bad of an angler I was while at the same time trying to upsale us on a longer significantly more expensive trip. We booked a 7 hour morning charter and seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time every step of the way. Mostly fed bait to bait. We pointed out a remora swimming around the boat and the mate hooked and brought it in so at least he got dinner. Went with my two brothers, my 10 year old, and my nephews 11 and 16. Saw dolphins (porpoises not food), jellyfish, the remora, and bait so it was a decent boat trip if shorter than 7 hours. Not enough cover for such a long trip and so many folk on board. I think they were both knowledgeable anglers but not particularly aware of the timing in Jacksonville specifically.
