Colossal Catch: The Reel Experience

Get the ‘Reel Offshore Experience’ with Captain Jonathan Kranker aboard his 22 ft Tidewater center console, the Colossal Catch. It is rare to see boats of this size that can tackle offshore waters with as much gusto as the Colossal Catch, whose huge Carolina flare gives it an extremely dry ride and whose facilities and creature comforts make it an enjoyable and comfortable boat to spend hours on out at sea.

Captain Jonathan’s goal is simple: to make sure that every angler on board has the best fishing experience of their life. He will teach you all the techniques you need to know to become an amazing angler, giving you the chance to see what it is like to be a boat owner: catching live bait, switching between fishing techniques and learning about the best areas to fish and techniques to use depending on the conditions. You will be using the same top of the line tackle the captain uses himself, with Penn reels and custom Blackfin rods all supplied on board.

Your trip will generally take place between three to nine miles offshore, although in very rough conditions it is also possible to explore the area’s great inshore fishery for Snook, Redfish, Trout and Tarpon. When fishing offshore, you could be trolling for species such as King Mackerel and Mahi Mahi, kite fishing for Sailfish, or bottom fishing for Snappers and Groupers.

Take the opportunity to fish with a knowledgeable captain who has lived and fished the area his whole life and will give you a real hands on experience of offshore fishing.

We went on a 3/4 day with Capt Jon on the Colossal Catch on 4-29. Caught Cobia, Snapper, Trigger, and had a wonderful time. Jon is a true fisherman and we’ve booked him in the past and we will definitely book him again in the future. He cares about his clients and keeping them on the fish. He is very knowledgeable about the fishery and a lot of fun to be with for the day.

We’re sorry to say the experience seemed off from other experiences.  First off he didn’t recall that he phoned us right away to change the date of the charter from April 20th to the 21st.  It wasn’t until I updated the charter date through booking.com since I thought the capt.  would update, so I let booking.com know the date had changed.  In which they notified Jonathan, then he called wondering why we wanted to change the date.  I reminded him that he is the one that changed the date due to another charter was already scheduled for the date.  Should I not have updated booking.com then apparently we would be a no show on the 20th and on the 21st probably already booked another charter.  When he called back after being notified of the date change he said the original date weather wise would be better anyway, so we switched the date back to the original date… Which needless to say per Jonathan it was too rough to go on the ocean, which is fine if we knew that to be true for sure.  Since other things were quite off that day.
He had no fish finder, they didn’t catch many fish to keep at all.  He kept implying they would catch their limit on a particular type of fish, but never caught but 2 of those fish.  Kept moving so much to find fish instead of fishing.  Tied up to the channel markers instead of anchoring, my husband thought that was illegal, but he didn’t seem to know that when asked.  Probably just easier.
So booking.com can update his website from no fish finder, plus no drinks provided, which he did tell us so when I asked.  However, booking.com still showed drinks provided.
The reviews on this charger were so great, so surprised of this outcome.  Not sure what his deal was that day, he was on the phone which I understand that happens especially in the business, however, assured the caller that he would be able to reach the caller since he wouldn’t be going out on the ocean.  So did he not go on the ocean due to weather or what reason.  Obviously safety is a concern.  However, he didn’t let the fisherman know where the life jackets were, which I assume he had them, maybe would have told them if they were ocean bound.
Hate to be so negative, but the overall experience was as such.  Especially for that kind of money and knowledge you pay a charter captain.  We were planning a fish fry with relatives from out of the state, but needed to buy fish to add to the few that were caught.  Plus the filleting of the fish was hardly that of a professional.  Which we understand that you would need to clean the fillets up a bit, but there was a lot of cleaning up to do let alone bones to remove as well when cleaning up the fillets.  I believe I captured all the sentiments from the fishermen and myself as setting up this charter, needless to say I was embarrassed that I’m the one who picked with charter.  Thanks for listening.

This whole review is a lie you weren’t even on the trip so it isn’t right that your making lies about my bussiness , if you ask any of my clients over the years my Boat and ways of fishing are professinal . I have a brand new garmin gps on my boat so there’s one lie , we caught over 30 fish that day I can’t help that certain fish weren’t in the right size , they had 10 fish to take home after a 4 hour trip . Sorry you think they had a bad time but not one of them seemed unhappy as they shook my hand before they left the dock .
