Spend the day with Fish With A Purpose and let them show you what makes the fishing in Groton so memorable!
These waters are known for Striped Bass, Bluefish, Cod, Mahi Mahi, Flounder, Haddock, Pollock, Black Seabass, Mako Shark, Thresher Shark, Bluefin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, and more – with any luck, you'll hook into a few!
You'll target your catch by spinning, popping, trolling, jigging, bottom fishing, or maybe something more specialized in this area. Capt. John and Will also offers fly fishing, but be sure to let us know well in advance if you want a fly fishing trip.
Trips with Fish With A Purpose are child-friendly. Snacks are permitted onboard — bring your favorites so that nobody gets grumpy on an empty belly!
Capt. John will bring you aboard a 28' Santa Cruz with room for 6 passengers. It comes with downriggers, and everything you need for a productive day on the water. There's a toilet on board for your convenience. What's more, this vessel is wheelchair accessible. Your captain will provide rods and reels, as well as lures. Live bait is included.
It's customary to tip the Mate 10–20% to show your appreciation.
Before coming aboard, you'll need to buy a local fishing license for everyone in your group. This information is usually available online, or you can ask the captain.
Don't forget to bring sunblock, a hat, bottled water, and sunglasses. If you'd like to bring other drinks, just ask. Alcohol is allowed in moderation, but try to avoid hard liquor as well as glass bottles.

Brought my friends from work out on a half day trip, turned out to become an all day trip, had a blast with the guys we all caught fish left and right and captain was very helpful and a great person overall! We plan on going again for sure.

John is a retired navy veteran who has been on the water of Long Island sound for over 2 decades as a fisherman and service member. Bill is a Merchant Marine Officer who has been fishing and boating the bay for over a decade before turning the skills and area knowledge into a fishing charter with John. We strive to have charters be not just a fun experience but a learning experience. Our definition of success would be having repeat customers learn enough through charters they can fish as well as us in Long Island sound/block island area. We believe there is no better social activity than being on the water with friends, family, and loved ones to make lasting memories and hope to see you guys out for a charter this season.
