‘Blue Makaira’ is Captained by Capt. Nuno, an IGFA registered Captain and a native of Madeira who has fished the Madeira waters for nearly 40 years. Blue Makaira is crewed by experienced international fisherman who’s prime aim is to get you connected to fish. Fishing with us is sure to be an unforgettable experience.

Whether you are an experienced Big Game fisherman, out to attempt that “world record”, a novice, or ‘just’ fishing for the thrill of it, then ‘Blue Makaira’ is perfect for you.

The Atlantic Blue Marlin that are to be caught off our shores are always sizeable with 1 in 10 being a Grander, a fish of a lifetime. Even the ‘average’ fish, weighing a mere 650lbs plus, will put a great smile on your face, and there is always a chance of catching a World record sized fish.

Blue Makaira is equipped with our clients in mind, comfortable and a very stable fishing platform. Tackle is the best available (Blue Makaira, is a member of the Shimano ‘ProStaff scheme) and the navonics/fishfinders are the top of the range from Raymarine.

Madeira, a small island in the Atlantic Ocean, is a natural Big Game fish attractor, with warm currents surrounding, attracting the bait fish who are food for their larger cousins. The oceanography of the island also lends itself to the attraction of the Big Game fish, the surrounding waters dive to great depths close to shore, with depths of over one thousand meters possible within a few miles of the coast, all this and well defined deep contour lines create an ideal environment for the Big Game fish to hunt in.

About the Captain

Nuno Goncalves
Calheta, Madeira, Portugal
Member since November 2016
On the 4th of July in 2016 Captain Nuno won the Blue Marlin World Cup at the helm of Blue Makaira. Madeiran by birth, Captain Duarte Nuno Vasconcelos Goncalves has been fishing the waters of Madeira since he was a young child, guided by his uncle who had also spent his formative years on a similar learning curve. As Nuno entered in to his teens his passion grew stronger, putting to sea with his brother in a ten foot boat (with a 4hp engine!) to explore the waters of Madeira, where they fished for their supper, an idyllic life for a young man. Fascinated by the sea and fishing, Nuno’s big opportunity came when in 2004 Calheta Marina opened. With the arrival of the Big Game boats, his moment had arrived, crewing and working on the boats whenever he got the chance beside some of the great Big Game Captains and crews that had flocked to Madeira to fish for the best Blue Marlin that the oceans had to offer. In 2013 Captain Nuno was certified as an ‘IGFA Captain'
