Priority on Board: Safety, Comfort, and
Mai 17, 2026
Aboard the Mathis, returning to our "habits" means drawing clear plans: targeting bottom giants like Red Snapper, Jacks, the fierce Cubera, or the legendary Roosterfish. However, a true waterman knows that nature always holds the final word and its coordinates can shift in a blink. Today, the Pacific greeted us with unexpected winds and a disorganized swell that tested every will on board, ultimately taking a toll on the health of one of our valued anglers. True to our philosophy that the safety and well-being of our crew always come first, we made the call to cut the trip short and head back to port early. Yet the sea, even on its roughest days, granted us a small gesture of courtesy before our departure: a Needlefish hit the line, providing the perfect moment to capture a great photograph and ensure our friends left with a smiling memory of their time on the water. There are days to battle giants, and days to respect the ocean; today we returned certain that protecting our own is always the greatest victory. Daily Log: • Original Strategy: Directed bottom fishing (Spermoper, Cubera, Rooster). • Capture: 1 Needlefish — The photo of the souvenir. • Note from the Captain: Early return due to strong wave conditions and protection of the client’s health. #CostaRicaFishing #SeaLegacy #AnglerSkill #Persistence #SportfishingLife #MathisFishingLegends #MahiMahi

Today’s Mission: When the Sea Answers to
Mai 16, 2026
Aboard the Mathis, our absolute priority is to connect with our guests' desires. Today, our anglers' goal was clear and direct: to fish whatever was biting the most, regardless of the species. Although we cast off a bit later than usual well into the morning, a captain who knows his waters well understands that late starts are overcome with solid strategy. We set our course offshore, and just as we hit the 7-mile mark, we crossed a perfectly defined current line, displaying all the optimal conditions that scream activity. The Pacific didn't take long to validate our instinct. What started as looking for "a little something for dinner" quickly transformed into a full-on feeding frenzy on deck. We managed to secure fourteen hard-fighting Mahi-mahi and a beautiful Spanish Mackerel, which brought great variety and technical action to the day. We returned to port with a packed cooler, but most importantly, with a group of deeply happy friends already checking the calendar for their next return. When the attitude on board is right, the sea always provides in abundance. Daily Log: • Location: 7 Miles out (Current marked). • Captures: 14 Mahi-mahi & 1 Spanish Mackerel. • Result: Full ice tray for dinner and customers ready to return. #CostaRicaFishing #SeaLegacy #AnglerSkill #SailfishRelease #SportFishingCostaRica #SportfishingLife #MathisFishingLegends #MahiMahi

The Sea’s Timing: Synchronicity, Tide, a
Mai 9, 2026
In fishing, as in the best stories, the prologue doesn't always define the book's ending. Today, after overcoming an unexpected delay and navigating against an initial headwind, we set out to meet the Pacific with an invaluable advantage: the synergy between our anglers and the crew’s wisdom. The Captain, reading the ocean’s invisible pages, suggested a tactical pause; the tide had not yet dictated the correct time for the main spot, so we chose to troll patiently, adjusting distances and gathering the small pieces that add up to final success. Our bottom-fishing strategy opened the first chapter of catches, revealing the diversity inhabiting the rocky structures: five Scorpionfish, four Rabbitfish, two Groupers, and a pair of Grunts, plus a small shark that reminded us who rules these waters. With the rhythm established and the tide in our favor, we turned our gaze to the blue horizon. The finale was masterful: ten Mahi-mahi that filled the deck with color and a striking Yellowfin Tuna that sealed a full day of technical success and camaraderie. Daily Log: * Variety of Background: 5 Scorpionfish, 4 Rabbitfish, 2 Groupers, 2 Grunts, a small shark * Pelagic Encounter: 10 Mahi-mahi & 1 Yellowfin Tuna. * Technical Note: Strategy based on the tide cycle and crew-customer collaboration. #CostaRicaFishing #SeaLegacy #AnglerSkill #Persistence #SportfishingLife #MathisFishingLegends #MahiMahi

"The 26": A Golden Chapter in the Pacifi
Mai 6, 2026
There are days when the sea decides to give us an unexpected gift. Despite being in the heart of the winter season, the Pacific opened its pages with crystal blue skies and clear horizons, reminding us that in these waters, there is no off-season for good spirits. We set our course toward "The 26," an area that today became the meeting point for those of us who know that patience is the best bait. We shared the horizon with fellow boats, all of us chasing that water change that promised a great story. Today’s crew was exceptional: "tuanis" people with that relaxed energy that the sea always knows how to reward. We navigated through a visual spectacle of small Mahi-mahi breaking the surface and birds marking our path. Our technical strategy, alternating squid, skirts, and plugs, allowed us to secure nine excellent-sized specimens. However, the moment of greatest respect was our encounter with a Sailfish, which we chose to release so it may continue writing its own legend in the ocean. Between laughs over a Marlin confusion and the adrenaline of a Black Tuna that gave us an unforgettable fight before shaking the hook, we returned to port certain that even when the fish choose not to bite, the experience lived is the most valuable trophy. Daily Log: * Duration: Full Day. * Zone: "El 26". * Captures: 9 pieces of excellent size. * Conservation: 1 Sailfish successfully released. * Sightings: Tuna, little mahi-mahi and seabird frenzy. #CostaRicaFishing #SeaLegacy #AnglerSkill #SailfishRelease #SportFishingCostaRica #SportfishingLife #MathisFishingLegends #MahiMahi

The Afternoon Shift: Persistence Over th
Mai 4, 2026
At Mathis, we know the sea doesn't always hand us its gentlest pages, but an experienced captain understands that character is forged in the swell. Today we hit the field for our half-day journey (5 hours), with enthusiasm as our primary engine. While we prefer the whisper of the early morning to avoid drastic weather shifts, this afternoon the Pacific decided to test us with intense winds and waves that grew considerably, challenging the visibility of our lures. Despite the adverse conditions, effectiveness was our hallmark: three medium-sized Mahi-mahi appeared through the whitecaps, and thanks to the confidence of our anglers and our technical precision on board, we achieved 100% efficiency. Not a single fish escaped our line. There is no greater satisfaction than seeing our friends return to shore with dinner secured and the gratitude of having overcome the elements on an afternoon that seemed impossible. Daily Log: * Duration: 5 Hours (H/D). * Capture: 3 Mahi-mahi (Medium Size/Palate). * Conditions: Intense wind and strong waves; 100% hitch effectiveness. #CostaRicaFishing #SeaLegacy #AnglerSkill #Persistence #SportfishingLife #MathisFishingLegends #MahiMahi

Southern Lessons: When the Sea Becomes F
April 29, 2026
There are seasons when the docks grow quiet and the tourism rhythm fades, but for those of us with salt in our blood, that silence is an invitation. Today, the Mathis didn’t set sail to fulfill a contract; it set sail to share a legacy. With a family crew and hearts filled with curiosity rather than experience, we pointed our bow South, searching for that pulse only the Pacific knows how to hide when it decides to be mysterious. The encounter was vibrant. We ran into a Mahi-mahi (Dorado) frenzy as they slowly reclaim their territory in our waters. Though mostly small to medium-sized, their energy is the perfect prologue for those learning to read the tension of the line. Between laughs and "missed hookups"—those chapters the sea keeps for itself after a lost battle—the crew eventually found their rhythm. We managed to bring 17 fish on board, but the true surprise was dictated by a rare guest: the Rainbow Runner. A relentless fighter and an exquisite table fish, it decided to close our day on a high note. In the end, we didn't count fish; we counted smiles and lessons learned under the sun. Daily Log: * 17 Mahi-mahi (Dorado) * 1 Rainbow Runner (Jurel Arcoíris) — The special guest of the afternoon. * Countless lessons — Learning the art of capture.
