Offshore Trolling Produces a Cabo Marlin
Captain Luis and the crew concentrated on offshore trolling, covering promising water while watching for bait, birds, temperature changes and other signs of game fish activity.
The crew incorporated the optional dredge system into the trolling program. A dredge creates a larger underwater profile that resembles a concentrated school of baitfish, adding another level of visual attraction beneath the trolling spread.
That offshore approach produced the trip's main opportunity when a marlin entered the action and was hooked. Following the fight, the fish was brought alongside the boat and successfully released back into Cabo's Pacific waters.
The day's fishing approach included:
Offshore trolling through productive water
Monitoring changing water conditions
Searching for bait and bird activity
Using the dredge to enhance the trolling presentation
Adjusting the spread as conditions developed
Catching and releasing one marlin
July Fishing Conditions Around Cabo San Lucas
Mid-July brings warm summer water into the Cabo fishery. With temperatures around 80°F, offshore anglers may encounter marlin, sailfish, dorado and yellowfin tuna depending on bait, currents and daily fish movements.
Conditions on July 15 were particularly comfortable for a six-hour charter. Light winds and manageable Pacific swells allowed Captain Luis to concentrate on searching offshore water without difficult surface conditions limiting the fishing plan.
