What anglers say about Haddock fishing
- 5.0/5(6hr Trip-Ground Fishing (AM))
Great day for groundfish!
First time out with those captain, and I took two guys with me who had never been deep sea fishing. Captain in first mate, very knowledgeable, helpful, and fun to interact with. Captain Derrick dealt well and vigilantly with the potential for some rough seas, and we all had a great time. Well, hopefully join him again.

About Haddock fishing
Haddock are Cod-like fish native to cold and deep northern Atlantic waters. They are quite easy to fish for, but the reward lies in their excellent taste.
Haddock are quite similar to their larger relatives Pollock, with the key distinction being their lateral stripes, which are darker and highly contrasted to the background color in the Haddock's body. Haddock also have dark blotches next to their pectoral fins, which are often referred to as the "Devil's thumbprints".
How big
The species is commonly caught between 15 and 30'' and 2 and 7lbs.
Distribution
Haddock inhabit the North Atlantic Ocean and can be found northwards of Massachussets in the west and of Bay of Biscay in the east. They are common off the British Isles.
How to catch
Natural bait is the most effective when fishing for Haddock, wiht clams and shrimp being primary choices. Alternatives will be cut herrings, squid, whiting, sand eels or mackerel. Artificial lures like teasers and jigs are known to work, but are much less effective than with the more predatory Cod.
These fish are usually caught in bulk. As they are on the smaller side, schooling and found in depths that demand the use of stout tackle, they present an easy angling challenge. The only trick is not to tear their delicate mouths when reeling them in.
Good to eat?
Superb quality white meat, often used in the making of British fish and chips.
