If you’re coming to Oregon to explore new fishing horizons, then Tillamook Bay Salmon fishing will be a real treat for you. Thanks to the five productive rivers that flow into the bay, Salmon runs here are the talk of the state, and for all the right reasons.

When to Go

You can catch Salmon in Tillamook Bay all year, just bear in mind that during summer and winter, the bite is spotty. To get a taste of the best action, hit the water during the spring and fall runs.

The Chinook spring run starts by the end of April and you can hook sizeable fish all through May and June. Chinook (King) Salmon that you’ll target at this time might not be as big as the ones in the fall, but they’ll still fight you with everything they’ve got. Trolling cut herring and spinners usually brings the best results.

Come fall, Chinook return to the bay in impressive numbers, and if you’re looking to land a 50-pounder, this is your time. The Kings will stay in these waters until mid-December, so there’s plenty of time to find your next trophy catch.

Wild Coho Salmon also visit the bay in September and October. You can even target Chum Salmon in November, just remember that you always have to release them.

What to Bring

Salmon in fishing in Tillamook Bay is great fun both for families and dedicated fish chasers, and there’s a good number of charters that specialize in targeting Salmon. Kids and beginners will enjoy half day trips the most while full day expeditions offer more time on the water and increase your chances of catching a “hog.”

Your fishing guide will provide his local expertise and necessary fishing gear. It’s up to you to buy a fishing license, and to pack food, drinks, and raingear. After that, there’s nothing else to do but enjoy fantastic Salmon action on Tillamook Bay!

Fishing is great. Like anywhere else, it's called fishing, not catching. Although we did catch fish, the captain made for a fun trip. I would recommend to go crabbing as well.

Hit and miss on the fish. Good weather but a very knowledgeable guide is recommended or you could be going for a boat ride

Go with Captain Andy if you want to have a great and successful time. The fishing was great, we all caught our limit, but only pulled up two crabs in the pots.

Track the weather. Best fishing for stealhead is after lots of rain that raises rivers to flood stage for several days. Be ready to fish when the water gets to a cloudy emerald green. The Kilchis will be ready first, Usually the second day after the rain backs off. The Wilson and Trask take longer, three days minimum.

Don't bring any of your own fishing gear. Dress for rain and cold - although it was 81 degrees on 10-17-18 when I went.
