The Blacktip shark is an excellent light tackle fighter, popular among anglers due to being accessible to target in inshore and nearshore waters.
The species inhabits warm and shallow waters, mostly up to 100ft, and can be found over coral reef drop-offs, in mangrove swamps and lagoons, muddy bays, but brackish estuarine environments as well.
How big
They grow to moderate sizes, with the average fish being about 5ft long and the largest one caught at 9.2ft. Even though they're not as large as sharks come, they are quite high up in their attack statistics. However, their attacks are mostly not lethal and they are peaceful among divers and when no potential food is around.
Distribution
They are widespread throughout all coastal waters within the tropical and subtropical zone. They are a common inshore species in the US, especially in Florida and South and North Carolina, between which they migrate seasonally, northwards during the summer and southwards in the winter.
How to catch
Blacktip sharks are excellent game fish on light tackle. Like all sharks, they are attracted to chumming, but are generally a grateful species to target, taking most live and dead bait and lures, as well as flies.
Good to eat?
They are fair eating, but should be bled and iced immediately upon capture if kept for consumation.
