78 Miles in the Storm
78 Miles in the Storm

Grit, Miles, and the Hardest Earned Catch When the weather forecasts turn into severe reality, the ocean tests every ounce of a crew's resolve. Right from the morning launch, we were hit with heavy rain and relentless winds that locked in for the entire day. But aboard the Mathis, we don't sit idle waiting for conditions to clear. We put our heads down and hunted, covering a massive 78 nautical milesin total, searching through stunning, near-transparent deep blue waters for an active bite. The offshore schools were incredibly sluggish, with the closest fast-moving tuna marks holding a staggering 12 miles past our final scouting position. We pushed through the heavy chop to reach them, running a slow and grueling tracking game. Just as we closed the distance, a small Spanish Mackerel finally hit the line. Was the ultimate objective of putting fish on the deck accomplished? Yes. Was it the epic blue-water blitz we always strive to deliver for our guests? Far from it. It was a brutal, exhausting day that demanded everything from the boat and the crew—but even when the ocean says "no," the Mathis never stops driving forward. Daily Log: Duration: Full-Day Heavy Weather Endurance Charter Total Distance Covered: Approx. 78 Nautical Miles (Offshore Scouting) Weather & Sea Conditions: Heavy continuous rain, stiff head-winds, and rough chop; clean, transparent deep-blue water but low fish activity. Total Catch: 1 Spanish Mackerel (Tuna schools detected 12 miles out but inactive). Key Highlight: A testament to the captain's elite work ethic and vessel resilience, running 78 miles under relentless storm conditions to locate fish and ensure safe operation despite a tough, slow bite. #StormFishing #GritAndDetermination #OffshoreCostaRica #StormNavigation #SpanishMackerel #RealFishing #CostaRicaSportfishing #NeverGiveUp #PuraVida

Earning Trust Under Pressure
Earning Trust Under Pressure

The Battle for a Trophy Roosterfish The pressure was on from the start. Our new guest, Mr. T, chose the Mathis specifically to show off his fishing skills to his friends after a previous run with a different boat. Due to an unexpected one-hour delay, we lost a critical early-morning window based on our initial charts. We started close—"just around the corner"—but quickly realized we needed a tactical audible. We shifted locations, hunting for the exact underwater structures that hold the sovereign of the inshore: the Roosterfish. The search was grueling. For over two hours, the target species refused to show up. Mr. T, viewing the flat surface with no visible bait or action, began throwing sarcastic jokes, questioning if we were even in the right spot. But as a crew, we trusted our data and kept our focus. During the transit, the ocean teased us with pods of dolphins, sea turtles, and two false alarms that tested our nerves. Suddenly, the water erupted. Subsurface predators began hammering bait that was completely hidden from view. Seconds later, a reel screamed violently. A true monster was on the line. The battle was intense, testing the absolute limits of our gear—the fish fought with such raw, relentless energy that it literally bent the hook, but our setup held. Bringing that massive, trophy Roosterfish over the gunwale completely changed the mood on deck. Sarcasm turned into pure adrenaline and respect. Mr. T left with a fisherman's promise: "We will be back!" Daily Log: Duration: Inshore Specialty Charter (Delayed Start) Target Species: Trophy Roosterfish (Catch & Release) Total Catch: 1 Massive Trophy Roosterfish (Bent the hook during the battle) Key Highlight: Overcoming a delayed start and client skepticism through persistent tactical relocation, securing a tournament-grade inshore trophy that tested the limits of the tackle. #MathisOceanAdventures #Roosterfish #InshoreFishing #TrophyFish #NeverGiveUp #HerraduraBeach #PuraVida

The Reality of the Ocean
The Reality of the Ocean

Persistence, Lessons, and the One That Got Away Sportfishing is a sport of passion, and the ocean doesn't always read the previous day's reports. After hearing great action updates, we charged out early with high expectations. We put in two solid hours of intense scouting from the first light, but mother nature gave a resounding "no" to every single boat that cleared the marina today. The morning only yielded a small Black Tuna, but we refused to give up. Chasing a blue-water alert, we pushed the Mathis further offshore, navigating up to 35 miles deep into beautiful, crystalline blue water looking for the right current. We ran hard, testing our limits, but the bite remained stubborn. It wasn't until we were on our return run that a massive Sailfish showed up, curiously shadowing the gunwale. We circled back, presented the bait perfectly, and teased him into a ferocious strike! The reel screamed, and the battle was on. Our young, apprentice angler took the rod, but a lack of experience in keeping the line tight and executing heavy pumps allowed the monster to gain the upper hand. The sailfish threw the hook and vanished back into the blue. At the end of a grueling day, our board read two Black Tunas and a heartbreaking loss. But that is the beauty of this sport: we win some, we lose some, but we never stop hunting. Every tough day is a lesson that builds better fishermen for tomorrow! Daily Log: Duration: Full-Day Scouting Charter (Approx. 8 Hours) Distance: Offshore up to 35 Nautical Miles Total Catch: 2 Black Tunas (1 Sailfish lost at the boat) Key Highlight: Transparent look into the reality of sportfishing. Highlighting the captain's relentless work ethic by running 25 miles out to find clean water, and the educational mentorship provided to apprentice anglers on board. #MathisOceanAdventures #RealFishing #OffshoreCostaRica #SailfishBattle #Persistence #HerraduraBeach #PuraVida
