A family fishing trip is about much more than catching fish. It's about spending quality time together, enjoying the beauty of the ocean, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Sometimes, nature has its own plans, and that's what makes every adventure unique.
Our day began in Nusa Dua, where the sea conditions were far from ideal. Strong winds, powerful currents, and high waves made fishing extremely challenging. We started with jigging and bottom fishing, hoping the conditions would improve, but by 9:00 AM it became clear that the ocean wasn't ready to cooperate.
Instead of giving up, we decided to head to Nusa Penida for a snorkeling session. Unfortunately, the sea there wasn't much friendlier. The waves remained rough, making snorkeling less enjoyable than we had hoped. While our guests were exploring the water, I spent the time thinking about another fishing strategy that would give them the best possible chance to experience the excitement of catching a fish.
On our way back from Nusa Penida to Nusa Dua, I made one final decision—I set the lines for trolling in the middle of the crossing.
That decision changed everything.
Suddenly, the reel screamed with the first strike. Moments later, another fish hit. The excitement on board was incredible as our guests battled two powerful fish: a beautiful tuna and a large Wahoo. Watching the whole family cheer each other on while fighting these fish was the highlight of the day.
The smiles on their faces made every challenge worthwhile.
I recommended that they take the tuna and part of the Wahoo back to their hotel and ask the chef to prepare them for dinner. There's nothing quite like enjoying a meal made from fish you've caught yourself just hours earlier. It became the perfect ending to an unforgettable family adventure in Bali.
Being a fishing guide is never easy. Every trip requires us to read the weather, understand the tides, choose the right fishing spots, and adapt our techniques to the ever-changing conditions. Fishing is much like hunting—you can prepare as best as possible, but nature always has the final say.
Our job is to keep trying, keep adapting, and never stop searching for the right opportunity. And when luck, experience, and timing come together, the reward is that unforgettable moment when the reel starts screaming and everyone on board shares the excitement of a perfect strike.
That's the magic of fishing in Bali. Every trip tells a different story, and sometimes the most challenging days become the most memorable adventures of all.
