Background
I grew up fishing for fun and work as a child. If we weren't fishing with my dad my mom would drop us off somewhere with our fishing rods and tackle and fish in the ocean, rivers, or sound until dark. Growing up in a fishing and boat building community really taught me the importance of the ocean and how it's food chain depends on we as a society to help sustain it. I love hunting for and catching fish but I also love teaching people about different species and how the food chain depends on each. At the ripe age of eight, I caught my first billfish in the Gulf Stream off the east coast. It was a sailfish and I knew from that instance that someday I would be a charter boat captain. Do what you love, love what you do. After working on all kinds of vessels from sport fishing yachts, container ships, to different types of commercial fishing vessels I've made being a charter boat captain my number one priority. At the age of 43, this is all I do for a living.
Techniques
My favorite style of fishing is trolling and fly lining. Trolling 5-7 artificial lures and ballyhoo behind the boat is incredibly exiting when multiple rods go off! Also, finding free floating kelp paddies in the ocean and fly lining live baits such as sardines, anchovies, or mackerel around them for tuna, dorado, and yellowtail will definitely get the heart pumping. With much guidance, I like to bring a hands on approach to the customers. This involvement of the customers gives them a sense of accomplishment and learning. I try to never let a customer just sit around and wait for the bite to turn on. It's better to be involved. Overall, every day is a new day on the ocean. What worked yesterday might not work today. Having a broad knowledge of different methods to getting fish on the boat is key.

Awesome time fishing in the bay with light spinning tackle. Captain Brian is very knowledgeable and helpful. I will book with Fin Runner next time I’m in town.

We had a great time on our trip today!  Captain Brian was very flexible with our meeting time in the am and was ready to go when we arrived!  We are originally from Seattle, so we do not know the San Diego waters well and Brian gave us a tour of the San Diego bay and even took us out to Point Loma.  We fished for primarily bass and halibut and were fortunate enough to catch several of each!  My 12 year old son caught a barracuda which was pretty exciting and our rods were also busy catching lots of bait fish.  It was a fun filled morning and we would highly recommend Fin Runner Sportfishing for your next trip.  We will definitely be calling Brian again!  No fisherman can ever guarantee you will catch lots of fish, (even they can have bad days) so we didn’t really have any expectations and were pleased with the amount of fish we caught.  Brian is friendly and helped our kids with their rods when they needed help.  Overall it was a GREAT TRIP.  Thanks so much Brian!  It was so nice meeting you and we’ll be calling you again.

We booked a half day trip. We used plastic bait to catch live bait which took 1 1/2 to 2 hours just to catch bait. The initial report said they supply bait so we lost fishing time fishing for bait. The captain caughtthe bait fish, and only four or five little fish. The captain moved the boat from area to area because we weren’t catching fish anywhere. After the half day trip neither myself nor my two sons caught a fish. Overall it was a nice trip around the cove but we didn’t want a boat ride, we wanted to fish. It was a waste of time and money.

Mr Arevalos,
I’m sorry you did not have a great time fishing with me.It seemed you were having fun even if the bite was slow. We actually weren’t using plastics to catch live bait. We were using sabiki rigs which is a very popular and effective way to catch live bait here in Southern California. And for the official live bait hunting time, I never spend more than 45 minutes looking for live bait which we caught plenty of. Your two hour stated time is way off.  If you remember I brought squid along and actually took you to the Imperial Beach kelp which is not apart of my inshore half day trip. I was trying very hard to find you fish and burned a lot more fuel doing so! In addition, I gave you guys an extra hour because the bite was off. But, that’s fishing. I’m never satisfied with myself for any rating under 5.0! I take great pride in the customers comfort and satisfaction! Fishing is all I do for a living. So anyway, I’m sorry you were not happy after all. Better luck to you in the future.
Sincerely,
Capt Brian

I gave this trip as a gift to my 4 adult kids and my son in law. They had a blast they said that Capt. Brian was very nice and helpful! They caught 3 fish and brought back 1 to enjoy since we are on vacation. We would definitely book again with Fin Runner Sportfishing Charter our next vacation to San Diego!!!

It was really nice to have a fast boat to get out to where the tuna were quickly. Capt. Brian threw out a few lines and almost immediately all lines were hooked up! We had a hard time deciding which lines to reel in first! The first set of tune we reeled in were really big and angry… The second, third, and fourth sets of tune were even better! Capt. Brian really impressed me with his knowledge and alertness to the changing conditions. Every time he made adjustments to the gear, bait, or tackle, we had more tuna in the holding tank! I was really feeling obligated to help keep all that blood cleaned off the deck, but it was a loosing battle. The only bummer about my Fin Runner trip was that we limited-out in a bout 2 hours of fishing, maybe less. Fin Runner is a newer boat and seems to be a tuna magnet; book it soon and book it often.
5 stars for efficiency!
