Background
I grew up fishing for fun and work as a child. If we weren't fishing with my dad my mom would drop us off somewhere with our fishing rods and tackle and fish in the ocean, rivers, or sound until dark. Growing up in a fishing and boat building community really taught me the importance of the ocean and how it's food chain depends on we as a society to help sustain it. I love hunting for and catching fish but I also love teaching people about different species and how the food chain depends on each. At the ripe age of eight, I caught my first billfish in the Gulf Stream off the east coast. It was a sailfish and I knew from that instance that someday I would be a charter boat captain. Do what you love, love what you do. After working on all kinds of vessels from sport fishing yachts, container ships, to different types of commercial fishing vessels I've made being a charter boat captain my number one priority. At the age of 43, this is all I do for a living.
Techniques
My favorite style of fishing is trolling and fly lining. Trolling 5-7 artificial lures and ballyhoo behind the boat is incredibly exiting when multiple rods go off! Also, finding free floating kelp paddies in the ocean and fly lining live baits such as sardines, anchovies, or mackerel around them for tuna, dorado, and yellowtail will definitely get the heart pumping. With much guidance, I like to bring a hands on approach to the customers. This involvement of the customers gives them a sense of accomplishment and learning. I try to never let a customer just sit around and wait for the bite to turn on. It's better to be involved. Overall, every day is a new day on the ocean. What worked yesterday might not work today. Having a broad knowledge of different methods to getting fish on the boat is key.

The experience was excellent. Capt Mike gave excellent teaching, explaining, & help to our 13 year old grandson. On a day of few bites Capt Mike came into the bay, helping us fish longer than hired for. He is gracious and a pleasure to be with.

Booked a 4 hour trip with Captain Brian. We weren’t having any luck in fact everyone that day was struggling. Brian went out of his way contacting other Captains and friends. The Bait dock was out of herring and he even radioed another captain and got us some different bait to try. We spent 6 hours rather then the 4 we booked and he made sure we didn’t go back till my 2 kids and girlfriend caught something! Great guy look forward to the next trip.

THANKS guys! That was definitely one of those ” A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work” days. But we managed to pull it off in the end. Look forward to seeing you again.

Brian was very accommodating and helpful prior to the trip and during the trip. He made sure everything was set in the planning before the fishing day.  And on fishing day he had everything prepared for us and we caught fish.

I haven’t been fishing in a long time so needed some help getting started.  He taught me what to do and got me catching fish in 20mins.  It was a good time.  We had 3 fisherman total on the boat and we all caught fish, didn’t get seasick, and all had a good time.

Brian has been fishing for a long time and has fished all over the world.  He has some good stories to tell.  And he has been taking people out to fish in San Diego for years and has good spots to take his visitors on.

If you are looking for a good guide, check out Brian.  He will do everything he can to make sure you have a good time.

Sam and Melissa,
It was great meeting you guys! Thanks for sticking it out before the trip. Having a trailer tire blowout on the interstate is not fun. You guys even waited for me to get it fixed at the tire store not to mention the reschedule. There was no way I would let you guys go back to New Zealand without catching fish in San Diego. Congrats on the marriage proposal!

So first off it was a slow fishing day. We signed up for a half day trip (5 hrs) which is inshore fishing for sea bass, yellowtail etc. We only caught a couple of striped bass in the bay on the way back bc the fish just were not biting that day. All that being said I felt like Capt Brian gave us the best shot to catch fish. He’s very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. He even gave extra time, as much as we wanted because of it being a slow day. All in all it was a great experience. Even though we didn’t catch big fish I would put money on getting them on a second day with Capt Brian.

If you’re considering going out to fish with Brian, definitely do it! This was my first deep sea fishing charter and I had no clue what I was doing. It was more than great and I learned so much! Already planning to go back! There was excellent communication and Brian is a freaking bad ass! Definitely a must do! :)

After looking at the reviews of the different guides and boats on FishingBooker for what ever reason I kept coming back to Brian and the Fin Runner and I’m sure glad I did.  As soon as I booked our reservation Brain called to let me know he had received it and would be contacting me later with all the details, which he did. We had booked for in the morning but Brain asked if we could change to the afternoon, which was great for my wife since she isn’t a morning person.  He was at the marina on time with a huge smile on his face and made as feel like family the minute he introduced himself.  Once underway is was very professional but yet still a hoot.  He explained where and what we going to fish for and told us what to expect.  He also told us (which we know because we do a lot of trout fishing on our own boat back home) that fish are finicky and just because they are at one spot in the morning they may not be at that same spot in the afternoon.  Brain worked his fanny off to get us to the right spots and he did.  We didn’t catch a lot of fish but we caught fish and had a great time doing it.  This guy is a true professional and such a fun person to fish with, he is worth every penny and then some.  I will defiantly fish with him again, as we had a great time and we consider him a friend.

Thanks so much for fishing with me guys! I had a great time. Also, taking your wife Susie fishing for her birthday was the best thing a man can do for his wife. It was great to see her laughing while out fishing us with different species of bass and a halibut

We had a great time. Brian tried his best to get us on halibut, unfortunately we were unable to find any. We had fun catching all the other species in the bay though.

I do have to point out it was very foggy and probably not the best day to be out. So I believe, it really could not have gone any better.

Thank you to Finn Runner and Capt. Brian Morris for the good time.

Thanks so much for fishing with me this morning! You’re quality people and I enjoyed your company not to overlook good conversation. We definitely had three different weather patterns working against us but you fished hard and had a good catch of calico, spotted, and barred bay bass.
Don’t worry, there’s two big halibuts here with your names on them!

We had a great time on our trip today!  Captain Brian was very flexible with our meeting time in the am and was ready to go when we arrived!  We are originally from Seattle, so we do not know the San Diego waters well and Brian gave us a tour of the San Diego bay and even took us out to Point Loma.  We fished for primarily bass and halibut and were fortunate enough to catch several of each!  My 12 year old son caught a barracuda which was pretty exciting and our rods were also busy catching lots of bait fish.  It was a fun filled morning and we would highly recommend Fin Runner Sportfishing for your next trip.  We will definitely be calling Brian again!  No fisherman can ever guarantee you will catch lots of fish, (even they can have bad days) so we didn’t really have any expectations and were pleased with the amount of fish we caught.  Brian is friendly and helped our kids with their rods when they needed help.  Overall it was a GREAT TRIP.  Thanks so much Brian!  It was so nice meeting you and we’ll be calling you again.

We booked a half day trip. We used plastic bait to catch live bait which took 1 1/2 to 2 hours just to catch bait. The initial report said they supply bait so we lost fishing time fishing for bait. The captain caughtthe bait fish, and only four or five little fish. The captain moved the boat from area to area because we weren’t catching fish anywhere. After the half day trip neither myself nor my two sons caught a fish. Overall it was a nice trip around the cove but we didn’t want a boat ride, we wanted to fish. It was a waste of time and money.

Mr Arevalos,
I’m sorry you did not have a great time fishing with me.It seemed you were having fun even if the bite was slow. We actually weren’t using plastics to catch live bait. We were using sabiki rigs which is a very popular and effective way to catch live bait here in Southern California. And for the official live bait hunting time, I never spend more than 45 minutes looking for live bait which we caught plenty of. Your two hour stated time is way off.  If you remember I brought squid along and actually took you to the Imperial Beach kelp which is not apart of my inshore half day trip. I was trying very hard to find you fish and burned a lot more fuel doing so! In addition, I gave you guys an extra hour because the bite was off. But, that’s fishing. I’m never satisfied with myself for any rating under 5.0! I take great pride in the customers comfort and satisfaction! Fishing is all I do for a living. So anyway, I’m sorry you were not happy after all. Better luck to you in the future.
Sincerely,
Capt Brian

I gave this trip as a gift to my 4 adult kids and my son in law. They had a blast they said that Capt. Brian was very nice and helpful! They caught 3 fish and brought back 1 to enjoy since we are on vacation. We would definitely book again with Fin Runner Sportfishing Charter our next vacation to San Diego!!!

It was really nice to have a fast boat to get out to where the tuna were quickly. Capt. Brian threw out a few lines and almost immediately all lines were hooked up! We had a hard time deciding which lines to reel in first! The first set of tune we reeled in were really big and angry… The second, third, and fourth sets of tune were even better! Capt. Brian really impressed me with his knowledge and alertness to the changing conditions. Every time he made adjustments to the gear, bait, or tackle, we had more tuna in the holding tank! I was really feeling obligated to help keep all that blood cleaned off the deck, but it was a loosing battle. The only bummer about my Fin Runner trip was that we limited-out in a bout 2 hours of fishing, maybe less. Fin Runner is a newer boat and seems to be a tuna magnet; book it soon and book it often.
5 stars for efficiency!
