3 Hour Afternoon Trip • 2 adults • 1 childCaptain Patrick was awesome. We booked a trip over labor day weekend and it was a beautiful day on the water. We complete newbies. He showed us how to catch the bait how to cast our line and how to reel it. He was very knowledgeable about the area and the good places to find fish. My son and I had a very friendly competition of who could catch more fish and I think we tied, but I got the biggest one. We’ll be back next time we find ourselves in Beaufort.

4 Hour trip • 3 adultsWe fished with Patrick at the end of April in the rain ALL DAY. He stuck with it. It was a little chilly, but we all had a good time. Booked Patrick again on June 30. Good bless him, he was in the water ready to leave the dock when we arrived at 6am in order to beat the heat. We had a good day. We caught dinner for the family. Should have caught more but we were a little rusty and slow to set-the-hook on several bites. Several also got off the line. BUT, again, we had dinner for the night. Filets on the grill !! Caught a few nice reds and some very nice sea trout. I didn’t know sea trout grew over 14”. Never caught any the size that we caught that day. Oh yeah, had a couple whiting filets for dinner as well. It was a good day. Great weather. Patrick is fun, easy to talk to, and keeps the hooks baited and in the water. Thanks Patrick!!

3 Hour trip • 4 adultsThe boat was beautiful, Patrick was a great captain, and overall fun time. My oldest caught a stingray and we almost caught some sharks. The fish weren't biting or they were biting and we just weren't catching. The captain did exactly what he needed to, when we weren't catching we moved somewhere else and tried again, when we lost our bait he quickly added more, he saw a big shark and pointed it out to us and took is in for a closer look, and he was easy to talk with, without talking too much. I wish we had caught some more fish but I wish I had booked a longer time too. We will book with him again.

5 Hour Trip • 3 adultsCaptain Patrick took myself, my father and father in law out on the inlet this morning and immediately we started catching red fish! Also caught shark, sea trout and stingray. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience overall!

3 Hour trip • 3 adults • 2 childrenMy two 9 year olds and I had a great time on our trip with Captain Patrick. We were only out for 3 hours but caught a lot of fish - 5 redfish, several stingrays, and a flounder. Also saw lots of wildlife, including a pod of dolphins! Captain Patrick was very fun to be around and great with kids. He clearly knows the area like the back of his hand and loves what he does. We'd love to come back again.

Redfish Tailing & Tarpon on Mullet
Aug 27, 2026 • St. Helena Island
Inshore: Captain Patrick Kelly **hidden content**) reports that in September the tailing pattern for redfish should continue to be strong, but the lower tide bite should also get better and better. It was already good at the end of August, and fish were feeding on everything from shrimp to mud minnows to mullet to Gulp! baits around pretty much any structure including docks, oyster beds, and creek mouths. The black drum fishing should also continue to improve on shrimp, and more large trout will be caught as temperatures cool. Numbers were already strong at times during August. More keeper flounder should be caught on mud minnows and finger mullet, and migratory species like tripletail, bluefish and ladyfish should be around until temperatures cool. And the silver king, tarpon, will almost certainly continue to prey on schools of mullet and menhaden all month. Overall, by the end of August the fishing was getting really good, and for the next two months it should be flat-out excellent.

Inshore: Captain Patrick Kelly **hidden content**) reports that in late July young-of-the-year redfish showed up in droves, which provide a ton of action for anglers and also indicate that it should be a good fall for fishing. Anglers can still pick up some bigger fish in the creeks, particularly around creek mouths with oyster beds, but in August targeting tailing fish on the flats may continue to be one of the best ways to find a bigger grade of fish. July also saw good catches of trout on live shrimp, and the trout should only get bigger this month as we approach the fall. While legal fish are still relatively uncommon there have been more flounder caught this year than usual, particularly around structure, and a few good ones. At the rocks they expect to continue to catch lots of black drum this month, and with fiddler crabs you can also catch numbers of sheepshead. Later in the month more big sheepshead should be landed if there is a little cooling. Migratory species like jacks, tripletail and tarpon should be around until the fall and, finally, don’t overlook sharks which can provide a ton of action for anglers.

Fishing and Celebrating 250 years of Fre

Inshore: Captain Patrick Kelly **hidden content**) reports that in July tailing redfish can be found on good flood tides when they are in the short grass eating fiddler crabs, and on moving tides fishing live or cut bait in areas where they ambush prey is a good bet. There should also continue to be a good bite on lower tides around docks and other structure. The trout bite turned on late in June and should continue into July, and fish will be caught on both live bait and imitation shrimp drifted around grass lines and in front of shell beds in clean, moving water. Rock close to the ocean has also been a trout magnet. There should also continue to be a good topwater bite for multiple species early, and jack crevalle and tarpon showed up in late June and should be around until the fall. Flounder fishing can be good with live finger mullet, mud minnows, or soft plastics, especially close to the ocean. Sheepshead are also around inshore, but generally they are on the small to medium side. Finally, keep your eyes open for tripletail in the rivers – especially closer to the ocean.

June Lowcountry Fishing Report 2026

Inshore: Captain Patrick Kelly **hidden content**) reports that June is an excellent month in Beaufort for a number of species, and even as air temperatures get hotter the fish typically still bite very well. A good year for cobia means the fishing is likely to extend into June in the Broad River, and fish should continue to be caught sight-casting with flies, lures, and live bait. Redfish can be found tailing at high tide on the main river grass flats where they are eating fiddler crabs, and at lower stages of the tide you can find them in deep holes surrounded by shallow water in the smaller creeks or around docks. Redfish will eat a wide variety of baits and lures. Trout can be caught this month fishing along grass lines at higher stages of the tide with live shrimp or mud minnows under a popping cork, and you will also pick up other species this way including bluefish, aerially exciting ladyfish, and more. Also, don’t overlook an early topwater bite for trout, reds, and sometimes other species. On the bottom around structure and creek mouths you can catch flounder with mud minnows, finger mullet, or artificial baits, while fishing fiddler crabs around docks and downed trees is a great way to pick up sheepshead and sometimes black drum. Finally, the inlets have delicious whiting that will take small pieces of shrimp and abundant sharks that will take cut bait.

Spring Report 2026

Inshore: Captain Patrick Kelly **hidden content**) reports that as temperatures rise and even more bait starts to return in May the redfish should feed more regularly. The tailing activity at high tide should pick up as reds devour consistently available fiddler crabs, and fish should also eat better around the tide table in the creeks. If you can get live shrimp they are hard to beat, but finger mullet, small menhaden, mud minnows, and more will also catch redfish. Trout fishing should also pick up in the creeks and rivers, and both jigs and shrimp will catch fish – as well as finfish baits. Big roe trout will be in the main rivers to spawn. But the most exciting development in May is usually that the cobia return in numbers to the Broad River. Some were already caught in late April, and people will catch them both sight-fishing and anchoring baits on the bottom. Tripletail, bluefish, ladyfish, and other migratory species will also be around in ever-greater numbers during May, and the bigger flounder should continue to show up after starting to trickle back inshore during April. Finally, don’t overlook the sheepshead bite on fiddler crabs – especially before it gets very hot and patterns change.

Spring Break Fishing

Inshore: Captain Patrick Kelly **hidden content**) reports that in April redfish will be almost completely broken out of their tight winter schools on the flats, although there will continue to be docks that hold good numbers of fish. While they can be a little finicky, cut mullet will be a good bait for reds this month as will live shrimp. As temperatures continue to rise they will feed more and more on fiddler crabs, and tailing activity should get better and better on high water. Trout fishing will also improve in April in moving water, with small live shrimp, mud minnows, and grubs all working. Topwater activity for trout and reds should also start this month during low light periods. This month many of the larger sheepshead that have moved offshore will return inshore, where they can be caught around docks and other structure on fiddler crabs. By the latter part of the month some cobia should arrive and perhaps other migratory species such as bluefish, ladyfish and more.
