Some days the water just gives it up. Tuesday's midday trip aboard the 17' Boston Whaler Montauk was one of them.
Captain Bruce ran Paul and Kim, visitors from White Rock, out to the red can on Discovery Passage for the 11 AM departure. Conditions were rewarding — 20°C under overcast skies, a light north wind at 6 knots, and seas of 1 metre or less. A comfortable, fishable day with 10 km visibility.
The timing worked in our favour. Slack before flood at Seymour Narrows landed at 10:32 AM, right as we set lines, and the building flood tide turned the bite on. We trolled hoochies behind flashers with downriggers set 80 to 120 feet. Water temp read a warm 17.3°C, keeping the fish active.
The action was electric. Three Chinook kept, four released — and the headline fish was a chrome bright 28-pounder, a true Tyee-season trophy. Most fish ran in the honest 12-16 lb range, exactly what September delivers here. Solunar forecast was rated Good, with the morning feeding window flowing right into our start.
Best of all, this was Kim's first fishing trip ever — and it was a huge success. She and Paul are already planning their next one.
The Montauk is nimble and perfect for two anglers who want an intimate, focused day on the water with a veteran guide who knows every eddy in the passage. September is Tyee season — your best shot at a trophy Chinook all year.
