September has arrived and the fish know it. This morning Captain Bruce ran the 4-hour introductory trip aboard the nimble 17' Boston Whaler Montauk, with Samson visiting from Edmonton getting the full Campbell River experience.
Conditions were rewarding. A mild 18°C under an overcast sky, southeast wind light at 8 knots, and clean 10 km visibility. The marine forecast held seas at 1 metre or less — comfortable water for a morning of trolling. Surface temp was 17.5°C, warm enough to keep the salmon feeding up high.
We worked the Hump on the morning flood, riding the tide as it built toward the 11:35 AM high. Blue glow Tomic plugs down 80 to 120 feet did the heavy lifting. The bite was on: 4 kept and 7 released, with a chrome-bright 15-pounder as the fish of the day. Most fish sat in that solid 12-16 lb range — quality feeders, fresh from the salt.
The Last Quarter moon carried a Good solunar rating, and the early feeding window lined up perfectly with our dawn start. That's the value of the morning departure this time of year.
The Montauk is a classic open boat built for two anglers — nimble, quick to the spot, and perfect for an intimate day on the water. Free parking at the south end of Tyee Plaza, departing Coast Marina A Dock.
