Depending on conditions, you might hook into Red Emperor Snapper, Nannygai, Bigeye Trevally, Giant Trevally, Coral Trout, Great Barracuda, Narrow-barred Spanish Mackerel, and whatever else is biting. You can expect to do some trolling, bottom fishing, or maybe something more specialised in this area.
Cairns Reef Fishing runs a 42' Randell cruiser with capacity for 12 passengers. It has all the essentials. There's a toilet on board for your convenience. Rods, reels, and tackle are provided, along with lures.
You'll have the help of a First Mate to put you on fish. Mates work hard to make your trip count, so a 10–20% tip is customary.
The charter boat covers your fishing license, just show up ready for some fishing! Be mindful that some species may have special rules or limited seasons. Simply ask and your captain can tell you more.
A few items to bring include sunscreen (non-spray), and sunglasses. There will be some drinks on offer, but let the captain know if you wish to bring your own. Alcohol is allowed in moderation, but you should avoid hard liquor as well as glass bottles. There will be food and some light snacks for you on board.

One of the absolute highlights of my trip!
I was honestly SO excited the entire time — everything about this trip was amazing. The boat was super clean and in great condition, and I was really impressed by how the crew kept everything tidy throughout. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made sure everyone felt safe and comfortable. And the fishing? 🐟 It was on fire! I caught plenty and had the best time doing it. I never felt rushed or lost — they explained everything so clearly. I’d absolutely recommend this to anyone coming to Cairns. 10/10, would go again in a heartbeat!
