The Rusty Hook

Calle Albatros (infront of The Elements Condos), Playa Del Carmen, QR 77720, Mexico

Quintana Roo is one of those places everyone’s always jealous of: sandy beaches, tropical trees, and excellent bluewater fishing right on your doorstep. Your captain looks forward to showing you just why this reputation is well-earned!

You’ll embark on your angling adventure on board a 23’ Mako. She’s a center console, perfectly suited to the nearshore and offshore waters just off the coast of Playa Del Carmen. The onboard outriggers and downriggers will give you an edge when trolling since you can wet more lines at the same time. Once you get a strike, make sure to strap in the fighting chair, the fish you’ll target with the crew will test your skill and muscles.

Kids can have a lot of fun bottom fishing for Snapper and Grouper just a few miles away from the coast. If you’re looking to reel in a pelagic predator you’re in luck – you’ll be going after them a bit further out. Mahi Mahi, Barracuda, Wahoo, Sailfish, Blue and White Marlin can all be targeted, when in season. If you’re looking for a workout you can also hook up Amberjack, one of the toughest fighters pound-for-pound.

The Rusty Hook is a small family-owened company and they’re happy to provide you with a friendly and professional service, whether you’re a novice or a seasoned angler.

All payments are due in USD on the day of the trip. If you wish to pay in Mexican Pesos, the total will be calculated prior to the trip so you can come prepared. Please contact us before the trip so we can inform you of the amount due in Pesos. Please note that if you’re paying via credit or debit card, a local conversion rate will be applied, and there will be a processing fee of 15 USD.

Improve your Mexican vacation or chase your next personal best in these waters. Book a trip with The Rusty Hook and take the first step towards your new favorite fishing destination.

It started slow. But after the first bites we hooked my first Mahi-Mahi. The second took the bait just after the first was landed. After these fish, the captain and his first mate did everything to geht another fish on the hook... No bites.... Shortly before going back I saw a large black fish taking our lure... A hard fight started and we ended winner, mostly because of the perfect teamwork of the captain Edwin and his first mate! The first mate told the captain how to maneuvre and the captain did his job perfectly. The result was a fantastic blue marlin.

April fishing trip

VERIFIED

Half Day Trip (PM) on April 29, 2025

Right from the start, we were impressed with Jose and his crew. We showed up at 7:00 and were leaving shore within 5 min and had hooks in the water within 15 min. They gave us multiple choices to fish for large fish trolling or smaller fish casting. We chose to troll and had five hits in 2 hours and landed one fish. They definitely knew where the fish were. The wind/waves were a bit much for a couple of our young party so we had to cut our trip a bit short, but Jose drove the boat perfect and never felt unsafe. You won’t get a better experience with other outfits. Look forward to going again on our next trip to Mexico!!

Big fish weren’t biting…..:(

VERIFIED

Half Day Trip (AM) on August 14, 2024

We booked a 1/2 day and were hoping for a big fish miracle. Alas it was not to be. The captain and crewman were great and professional. The boat is very nice, clean and comfortable. We went out trolling for big dogs and got not bites. Then went in towards shore and caught a couple of small “trash” fish so at least we had dinner. Not sure if longer trip would have made a difference? I think regrettably the fish just weren’t biting that day. Other boats weren’t catching either. A bad day fishing is still a better day than a day at the office so still happy overall. Will try again another day and would happily do it on their boat.

3/4 Day Trip on June 2, 2025

On a day where it was not easy, the crew worked hard to put us on fish. After several hours they found success and we landed three great Mahi Mahi. Which were delicious back on shore!

Caught three mahi mahi. Decent size boat for a couple of people. First mate worked his butt off to ensure that the bait was good. Filleted the fish and we took them to a local place where we got a good meal for a good price.
