This was my first trip ocean fishing and I went with my son and a good friend. I have spent a lot of time fresh water fishing and was very interested in trying something new. I have some experience with chartering as I ran a charter boat on Lake Michigan out of Port Washington, WI for three years. Captain Kevin was obviously quite knowledgeable and tried his best but we were skunked after over four hours of fishing. Water conditions were not ideal, however, I think the Captain was a little distracted. He was setting up an interview with the Outdoor Channel and his attention was elsewhere. I was expecting him to change his tactics as what we were doing wasn’t working. On Michigan, if we weren’t catching fish we’d change lures, vary depths and trolling speed and find new areas. There were other species we could target if the Kings weren’t biting. On his charter, we pretty much stayed with casting shrimp on short leads below bobbers and we fished primarily in shallow water. Maybe this is how it’s done down here. I don’t know, but I will be doing more research if I charter again down here.
