Anglers looking for a sea-hardened captain and crew that can provide their customers a proper taste of New England fishing need look no further than Captain Matt Cooney and F/V Meredith Jean. Although he runs charters only from April to October, Capt. Matt fishes the Gulf of Maine year-round, catching anything the water has to offer. After 35 years of doing this, he'll always be able to point to where the fish are and teach you what the best way of getting it out of the water is.
For the day, you'll become part of the crew of Meredith Jean. She is a classic 35' North Shore – a very safe, comfortable, and seaworthy vessel. Powered by a 350 HP Isuzu engine and equipped with all the electronic and safety equipment you could think of, this boat will provide you with all the tools necessary for a productive day at sea. The boat's capacity is 6 guests, excluding crew, who can all fish at the same time. On Tuna trips alone the capacity is limited to 4 guests. The boat also has a private toilet.
On all charter trips, you'll be provided with top-notch Penn equipment. Depending on the trip and the fish you're targeting you may be using either live or artificial bait. In either case, you'll be provided with the bait you need. Live bait is typically caught at the beginning of the trip and bait such as Mackerel and Clam that you'll be using for tuna fishing and deep-sea fishing will be acquired ahead of the trip.
Also included in the price is your fishing license, meaning all you need to bring with you is a cooler with your choice of food and drinks, non-aerosol sunscreen, and your sunglasses. Please note that the deckhand works for a gratuity, and 15% is customary.

Cody was fantastic as the deckhand—incredibly helpful, patient, and great with the family. He kept the gear ready and shared awesome tips that made a huge difference. The boat was clean, safe, and fully equipped for a perfect day on the water. If you are looking for an amazing charter experience in Gloucester, we cannot recommend Captain Matt and Cody highly enough! We will definitely be back.

It was a chilly day and the groundfishing was slow, but the crew was excellent. They were friendly, helpful, and kept the trip enjoyable. We also checked lobster traps during the trip and were able to bring some lobsters home, which was a great part of the experience. I’d definitely recommend the trip and would go again.

5hr pm on June 28, 2024 • 4 adultsI took my three teenage boys on their first offshore fishing trip. Captain Mathew and First Mate Trevor were awesome! They knew just where the fish were. Captain Mathew gave us the option to stop and catch live bait fish on the way out. My boys got a kick out of catching multiple mackerel on the same rig at the same time. Then we went out to the deep waters and caught lots of haddock, cod, and a few other species. It was a great day and my boys really appreciated it. We brought home plenty of fish. The only thing I would do differently next time is go for a whole day instead of half.

We had a great day. Trevor did everything he could to keep us on fish. we caught five haddock, a crazy amount of redfish and a handful of other varieties that we didn’t keep because of the season. Perfect weather added to a perfect day. Trevor cleaned and filleted our catches, shared with us his knowledge of the local area and numerous tips on fishing. Can’t wait to book another trip.
