I am so completely disappointed with my fishing trip. I was so excited to go out and I talked with Captain Merlin multiple times prior to our trip both on this website and on Whatsapp and he was so nice and very responsive. BUT......upon arriving at the marina and meeting Captian Merlin I learned that he was not going out on the water and that he never goes out on the weekends. He pawned us off on his two crew members who were very nice and very good deck-hands etc. however, they seemed clueless about bottom fishing which Captian Merlin assured me we could do in the morning for the first couple of hours of the trip and they did not have any bate ready for bottom fishing. They were only set-up to go out and troll and although my BF and I each caught a Sailfish, it was not what we were expecting to be doing ALL DAY! Even when out trolling, the crew told me they had no idea what the marked spots on the GPS were for and they just seemed to drive around following other boats. The crew was super nice and the boat and equipment were top notch but we did not get what we paid for and what we were promised! Overall just super disappointed in Captain Merlin for not setting us up for what was promised and when I sent him my thoughts after the trip he didn't even respond to me!
Merlín has been fishing all his life, first commercially, then switched to sportfishing. He has been a licensed captain since 2014. A native of Quepos, he fluently speaks English and Spanish. He loves everything about his job, it allows him to do what he loves for a living and he's grateful for that. He participates in various tournaments including the 'World Offshore', and Pelagic inshore/offshore ones. He has a second captain, Robbie Segura, who will also run trips for him occasionally. Robbie has 35 years of fishing experience and also speaks English and Spanish. The first mates also speak both languages.
