Capt. Brian Patteson's Stormy Petrel II is the only fishing vessel in Hatteras that is certified by the USCG to legally carry more than 6 passengers for hire and that regularly offers private fishing charters. As such, you can bring your entire family along to enjoy a wonderful fishing adventure off the Outer Banks!

The Stormy Petrel II is a 56' walk-around design, a stable boat with far more deck space than most charter fishing vessels. As such, you have a big advantage when it comes to bottom fishing and as we can easily fish a dozen rods or more off one side of the boat. Her 16' beam also means more room across the stern for trolling, which is nice when a school of Mahi comes up behind the boat. There's also a spacious top deck where guests can take a break or go up and help spot fish. Captain Brian limits offshore trips to 12 passengers and nearshore trips to 20 passengers so that we can provide plenty of space and minimize tangled lines.

The boat's twin 500 HP Cummins QSC 8.3 liter diesel engines were installed in 2017 and they give a comfortable cruising speed of 16 to 18 knots, with more power in reserve should we need it. Common rail fuel injection makes for clean burning engines with very little fumes.

In 2026 we will begin our season in Hatteras and move operations to Oregon Inlet in early July.

We offer three types of trips. Our offshore trips are strictly private 10 to 11 hour charters and go to the Gulf Stream. On these trips, both bottom fishing and surface trolling can be productive depending on the conditions. Our 4 hour nearshore trips go to the ocean waters just off the beach and or in the sound depending on the sea conditions. On most of these trips, you'll be trolling small spoons for Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel. The 6 hour trips visit some wrecks and live bottom several miles offshore and offer chances to catch larger fish and more variety.

You need to bring your food and drinks, but we have the fishing covered.

10 Hour Gold Stream
Gulf Stream from Hatteras on July 12, 20258 adults
We had 10 guys on this trip. Captain Brian and first mate Danny were excellent. We caught our snapper limit in the first 2-3 hours of being on the water. Their help was great. We caught Red Sapper, Wahoo, Kobia, zamber Jack, and Mahi Mahi. The only feedback I would give is the morning debrief on how to use the rods was hard to hear over the roar of the engine so most of our group had to learn on the fly while we were fishing. All in all a great successful trip!

Thanks for fishing with us Lee. I’m glad you enjoyed the trip. We are only allowed to harvest the Red Snappers a couple of days each year, so you definitely picked the right day!

Great trip for a large group
4 Hr Midday Hatteras Inlet on April 21, 202510 adults
One of the best fishing trips I’ve been on (and I love to fish!) Great for a large group of people, ready to have some fun. From the moment we got our poles in the water we were catching fish non-stop left and right. First Mate Dan & Captain Brian are awesome & very accommodating. Set up the poles, bait, got our fish in the cooler. The boat is big & plenty of room. Very enjoyable, would love to do it again!

4 Hr Early AM Hatteras Inlet on August 6, 20259 adults1 child
60 fish caught in 4 hours! Over 90 pounds of Blues and Spanish Mackerel! Fish were biting as soon as we dropped our lines. Captain Brian and First Mate Danny were great to work with. Boat was clean, well appointed, and BIG. We were a group of ten and twice as many people would have had plenty of room.

4 Hr Midday Hatteras Inlet on June 25, 202512 adults
First we caught a good amount of Spanish Mackerel (about 30) and then Captain Brian heard about a spot with Blues. We went there and caught about 30 of them. Captain stayed there a bit past our end time as we were reeling in multiple at a time. Danny the mate was hustling the entire time. Highly recommended!

Captain Brian and first mate Danny are very knowledgeable and willing to teach you things as you fish. I highly recommend for adults and children. The boat has many accommodations that make the day comfortable for all. Bring your water and snacks and they will take care of the rest.
