Stormy Petrel Charters welcomes you to Hatteras for a memorable day of fishing. Capt. Brian Patteson’s boat is the only fishing vessel in Hatteras that is certified by the USCG to legally carry more than 6 passengers for hire and that regularly offers private fishing charters. Bring the entire family along and enjoy a wonderful fishing adventure in North Carolina!
The Stormy Petrel II is a 56’ DMR walkaround, a stable boat with far more deck space than most charter fishing vessels. As such, you have a big advantage when it comes to bottom fishing and you can easily fish a dozen rods or more off one side of the boat. Her 16’ beam also means more room across the stern for trolling, which is nice when a school of Mahi comes up behind the boat. There’s also a spacious top deck where guests can take a break or go up and help spot fish. Captain Brian limits his offshore trips to 12 passengers and nearshore trips to 20 passengers so that he can provide plenty of space and minimize tangled lines.
The boat’s twin 500 HP Cummins QSC 8.3 liter diesel engines were installed in 2017 and they give a comfortable cruising speed of about 16 knots – plenty for Hatteras – with more power in reserve should you need it. These modern Tier 3 engines are remarkably quiet and free of smoke in addition to being most efficient.
The crew offers three types of trips. Its offshore trips are strictly 10-hour charters and go to the Gulf Stream. On these trips, both bottom fishing and surface trolling can be productive depending on the conditions. The nearshore trips go to the ocean waters just off the beach and/or Pamlico Sound in the vicinity of Hatteras, depending on the sea conditions. On most of these trips, you’ll be trolling small spoons for Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel.
Just bring your food and drinks, the crew has everything else covered.
Stormy Petrel Charters is waiting for you!

10 Hour Trip – Gulf Stream
We had 10 guys on this trip. Captain Brian and first mate Danny were excellent. We caught our snapper limit in the first 2-3 hours of being on the water. Their help was great. We caught Red Sapper, Wahoo, Kobia, zamber Jack, and Mahi Mahi. The only feedback I would give is the morning debrief on how to use the rods was hard to hear over the roar of the engine so most of our group had to learn on the fly while we were fishing. All in all a great successful trip!

4 Hour Trip – Nearshore Early AM
60 fish caught in 4 hours! Over 90 pounds of Blues and Spanish Mackerel! Fish were biting as soon as we dropped our lines. Captain Brian and First Mate Danny were great to work with. Boat was clean, well appointed, and BIG. We were a group of ten and twice as many people would have had plenty of room.

6 Hour Trip–Nearshore Fall Fishing
Captain Brian and Pete outdid themselves on this charter. Not only did we catch a ton of fish - King Mackerel and Amberjack - we had a beautiful day on the water. They both were very helpful and knowledgeable in explaining how to maximize our time and efforts. The Captain was also very kind to a couple of our group members who were struggling a bit with seasickness and that was so appreciated!! The vessel was clean and well outfitted and really the entire trip was so worth it - also helped us find a gentlemen to prepare the fish for travel and cooking at the dock. A very strong recommend for the Stormy Petrel II…

10 Hour Trip – Gulf Stream
Been wanting to take family on offshore trip for years. 5 boys, 14-24, 10 yr. old daughter, 6 yr. old grand-daughter, wife and I. When I asked to book 2 months ago, Captain advised that 10 hrs could be a bit much for younger ones. Again yesterday morning he was looking out for us when we met at the dock in the morning and advised us of the intesity of the fishing we would be doing. Gave us a pre-trip expectation as to what to expect from the trip and what the crew expected from us to make our trip the best possible. We said we were good, and he, Ms. Kate, and Danny took us for amazing trip. Hope we did as well listening to their expectations as they did living up to what they set for the trip. Caught first wahoo about hour out. was a little slow for a bit but we had a blast. Caught more wahoo, then mahi, and a couple tuna. We could not say enough. It was amazing lifetime experience. They shared all kinds of marine information with us through the day. Made for a great homeschool field trip, far better than anything you could ever experience in class room or at home. The boat size was perfect to accommodate the 9 of us and made us feel safe especially for our 6yr old walking around. Agree, for some children (and adults) 10 hrs out might be a lot. I personally (at 52) am not fond of boats, as I was feeling sick most of the day. But my family was all ok and I would defiantly do it again. We caught over 140 ponds of fish we had filleted on the dock. Ate some last night, rest in the freezer already. Far better of a trip than we could have asked for. Defiantly set some high expectations for our next trip!

10 Hour Trip – Gulf Stream
Having charter fished for years, I have had my share of good times catching fish with charters of many sizes. I have to say the experience on the Stormy Petrel II was one of the best! The uniqueness of the design of the Stormy Petrel II and Captain Brian Patteson's knowledge of the waters around Hatteras Island and into big water made for an incredible time. When you add very well maintained equipment and a Top Notch First Mate (Thanks for helping make our fishing trip awesome Danny!) you get a bunch of happy anglers. There were 10 people in our group and we all caught plenty of fish each (a few shy of 50 total) and had a great time doing it. The other charters coming in that we saw only had a few fish onboard as the water was still a bit out of shape from a storm. The Captain got us on fish and the Mate kept them coming in as quickly as possible and incredibly smoothly, especially considering the number of people and rods he was working. If you have a group that wants to fish off Hatteras, I HIGHLY recommend Captain Brian and the Stormy Petrel II. Zero regrets and excited to go again!
