Having been in the waters of Kailua-Kona since 1973, the Huntress, formally known as the Black Bart, has seen and been a part of some of the greatest catches in big game fishing history. It's most famously known for capturing Bart Miller's 1656-pound Pacific Blue Marlin in 1984.
Built back in 1965, the Hull #13 was the largest boat Buddy Merritt had built at the time. This 42' Merritt served as the leading inspiration for the world-famous 43' variant that was produced later.
The Huntress is now captained by Jack Leverone, a young captain, born and raised in Kona, with many years of experience fishing both in Hawaii and elsewhere around the world. Capt. Leverone has traveled to Australia's Great Barrier Reef multiple times in search of the world's largest Black Marlin. He's also fished the epic waters of Cape Verde, a destination famous for high numbers of Blue Marlin, and some of the world's largest.
Fishing on the Huntress is very relaxing and enjoyable. With a sharp, young crew, they'll show you everything you need to know as you're getting ready to capture the fish of a lifetime. You'll do so safely, efficiently, and with one of the best crews in the business by your side.
Trolling 4-5 lines at a time, our lure spread consist of different sizes, shapes, and colors. This way we can cover a large spectrum and find out what the fish are eating.
In the events of capturing a Billfish, we'll get the fish along the side of the boat for some great pictures, and for the angler to take a quick look before pulling the hook out, giving the fish a healthy release.
As for the fish to eat – Tuna, Wahoo, and even Mahi Mahi will be cut up on deck shortly after capture, stored on ice, and given to the guests for everyone to eat and enjoy later on.

They give detailed instructions to make even us Iowans comfortable before the reel starts screaming! And were we ever BLESSED to hear it SCREAM this trip! We first got to experience the MIGHTY blue marlin. To watch it dance on the water was phenomenal to say the least!! Rooster was quick with the lens to get us some amazing shots! The next scream of the Reel was even more of a fight. Captain Jack used his life time charter experience to help me make it a successful catch! The Yellow Fin Tuna weighed in at 177.5 pounds. Captain Jack and Rooster helped us check a box on our bucket list. And it took a really BIG bucket at that! The screaming reel is Love Music to our ears while celebrating 40 years of Marriage. We Definitely will be back with HUNTRESS Fishing Charters. Make sure to book with Captain Jack and Rooster to fulfill your DREAM!! Keep those Reels Screaming until we are back on the water with you! 3/4 Day Trip on April 25, 2024 • 2 adultsWe hopped aboard the Huntress, a beautiful 42-foot boat run by Captain Jack and his first mate, Robert. Let me tell you, that boat was top-notch – roomy, cozy, and spick-and-span, with engines that could zip like nobody's business. We had a good number of bites out there. Released a couple of Spearfish, but darn it, lost a massive 400-pound Blue Marlin. We also felt some action that we reckon was Yellowfin Tuna (Ahi) and another Spearfish. The trip started with a quick rundown on handling the equipment and facilities on the boat. Just 30 minutes after leaving the harbor, we had our first bite. Kona's a cool spot for fishing – you can snag some big game fish not too far from shore. Pretty neat. Overall, the boat, the crew, and the fishing were all top-notch, making for some awesome memories. Here's hoping we'll return someday for another go at it!

We had 3 other fish hit the lures but didn’t bite the hook. That’s why it’s called fishing and not catching. I’ll definitely go back out on the Huntress when I come back to the Big Island!!!!
