Whitecap Outfitters LLC
Make the most of your time in the Chicagoland area fishing with Whitecap Outfitters. Having logged many hours on these tides, Captain John can tell you all about them.
Depending on the time of year, you might hook into Salmon, Lake Trout, Brown Trout, Coho Salmon, Rainbow Trout (Steelhead), and whatever else is biting. Depending on the species you're after, you may find yourself light tackle fishing, trolling, bottom fishing, or maybe something more specialized in this area.
Capt. John welcomes children aboard, so the whole family can come and unplug for the day! Be sure to ask if child-sized life vests are available, otherwise you should bring your own. Customers are encouraged to bring snacks so that everyone stays happy and energized!
Your fishing machine for the day is a 24' Smoker Craft sportfishing boat with space for 4 passengers. It comes with downriggers, and all the essentials no fishing machine can run without. Capt. John will provide rods and reels for you, as well as lures. Live bait is on offer, but you should ask the captain whether you'll be catching it yourself.
You'll have the help of a First Mate to put you on fish. It's customary to tip the Mate 10–20% to show your appreciation.
You will need to buy a local fishing license before the trip. This information is usually available online, or you can ask the captain. Some species may be off limits or require a special tag, so make sure you know what to expect.
It's recommended to bring sunglasses, a hat, sunblock (non-spray), and bottled water. If you'd like to bring other drinks, just ask. Alcohol is allowed in moderation, just be sure to avoid hard liquor as well as glass bottles.
Give yourself something to look forward to and book a trip with Whitecap Outfitters!

Never went on a charter before today so our group didn’t know what to fully expect. Prior to the reservation, John reached out to make sure we had our licenses and was more than willing to answer any questions regarding what else was needed. Asked what we were interested in catching and pointed out what and where we could catch for our interest. John and Con were friendly and gave us plenty of tips when reeling in our catches, which included King Salmon, Coho, and Lake Trout. We had a couple bites right off the bat, then took a just shy of a couple of hours til the next bite with another pause of about a little over an hour until we hit 126 ft depth where the bites from trout really started coming in! We could tell how much John and Con really wanted to make sure we could see some action out there because they both kept monitoring the fish finder and adjusting to try and get us to some hits. To me that really showed how much they wanted us to have a good time and you don’t how much we all appreciated that! Had 14 bites and caught 11, with each of us hitting our limit for trout and catching 3 salmon. Enjoyed the conversation with the crew and learned a lot about fishing out on Lake Michigan which scratches that unique kind of itch for folks who would love to try fishing in bigger bodies of water for the first time. We were a group of 4, boat had enough room for us to feel comfortable but be wary of when bites start coming in consecutively, makes getting around a bit of a jumble but not enough so that you can’t reel in the bite. I’m personally pretty prone to getting bug bites, and got a total of 14 while on the boat so definitely advise folks to bring some repellent for use before boarding and wearing pants and long sleeves! Best of all though, was seeing our friend light up and truly enjoy his birthday with all of us enjoying our first charter. Absolutely looking forward to coming out again with John and Con if we can next year!
