If you’re ready to get hooked on fishing in Kailua-Kona, we’ve got you covered with Kona Blue Sportfishing. With Captain Marlin at the helm, you’re in knowledgeable and experienced hands.
Depending on the time of year, you might hook into Dolphin (Mahi Mahi), Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Swordfish, Skipjack Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Albacore Tuna, Shortbill Spearfish, Black Marlin, Striped Marlin, and anything else that bites.
You’ll target your catch by light tackle fishing, trolling, or maybe something more specialized in this area.
You’re free to bring home any fish you catch, so long as regulations allow it. Plus, you can have your catch cleaned. Talk about bang for your buck!
Thinking of bringing the whole family? Kids are absolutely welcome! Children must wear life vests, so find out if the appropriate size is available on board. And, you can’t go wrong with snacks for a boost of energy when needed!
Capt. Marlin runs a 47’ Sportfishing that holds up to 6 passengers. It comes with outriggers, downriggers, a fighting chair, and all the essentials. There’s a toilet on board for your convenience. What’s more, this vessel is wheelchair accessible.
Rods, reels, and tackle are provided, as well as lures. Live bait is available, but it’s good to ask about this so you know if you’ll be catching it yourself.
There will be a First Mate on board to help your trip run smoothly. Mates work hard to make your trip count, so a 10–20% tip is customary.
Your fishing license for the day is covered by the charter boat, just show up ready for some fishing! Have in mind that you may release some fish due to regulations. If you don’t know what to expect, ask the captain.
You can’t go wrong when you bring sunglasses, sunscreen (non-spray), bottled water, and a hat. There will be some drinks on offer, but let the captain know if you wish to bring your own. Alcohol is allowed in moderation, just be sure to avoid hard liquor as well as glass bottles. There will be some light snacks provided on board.

Great experience with Kona Blue
I would definitely recommend Capt. Marlin and the Kona Blue to anyone looking for a serious billfish trip. The boat is in top notch shape, with new electronics, a Seakeeper system and a beautiful interior. First mate Brandon was very helpful in getting us ready to fight fish with proper form, and we felt taken care of the entire day.

Wow!!!!
Captain Marlin and Brandon were amazing guides! Super communicative and friendly from the beginning made this trip stress free. Caught and released two blue marlin and caught one Mahi for dinner! The crew provided great instruction and teaching throughout the trip. Fantastic boat - super clean and well maintained. Interior cabin was super comfy and what a great bathroom (best I’ve ever seen in a fishing boat). Can’t recommend this team enough. I will definitely be back!!!!

They provide a premium trophy fishing experience aboard a fully functional, luxurious sport fishing boat, dedicated to targeting only large fish. If you're looking for a clean, well-maintained boat run by an experienced crew, and you're seeking an unforgettable memory—even if it means possibly not catching a fish that day—this is the boat for you. But if you're just looking to catch any fish, this may not be the right choice. In life, you pay for what you get, and the money spent on this trip is absolutely worth the experience and the lasting memories you’ll create. I’m already looking forward to returning to Kona and heading out with Marlin again. Marlin’s boat and crew are fantastic, and though they are still a growing charter company, I believe they will become one of the most sought-after in Kona. Their operation is top-notch, and I say this after having been on several other boats that don’t come close to matching Marlin’s standards.
