Days Out Fishing Charters offers unique fishing experience in the rich Bay of Islands. These waters are crammed with fish off all shapes and colors, and you will be fishing with the Bay of Islands' only big Snapper and Kingfish Specialist - Skipper Darren Knapping
Whether you're a pro angler or a bit less experienced, Capt. Darren will help you have a time to remember. His trips run year round and often get people the fish of their lifetime. Skipper Darren is a local fisherman. He grew up fishing around these waters and has a deep understanding of the ocean and the rich life beneath the surface. Having served in the New Zealand Navy for a number of years and working in commercial tuna fishing, Darren eventually came to build one of the finest fishing machines in the area.
Days Out is a 2026 custom-built 9mtr Makaira She is powered by twin 250HP Honda engines. The boat can take up to 6 people inshore and up to 4 offshore and it's rigged with Garmin navigational electronics, features a toilet, tuna tubes, a big live well, and ice boxes. She has a full cabin,, plenty of room for fishing, and enough shade for all people onboard. She is a boat build locally fit to weather these waters.
You'll face numerous fish species in the Bay of Islands. Darren is a specialist when it comes to Yellowtail Kingfish and Snapper. His private trips will see you using a variety of techniques, using catch tackle and quality rods and lines. Darren will supply all the gear, tackle, and license. There will be some snacks and drinks on board lunch can be served for an additional cost if requested beforehand.

Darren is an exceptional Skipper. Thanks RNZN for developing people of this quality. Friendly, professional, knowledgeable, reliable and a great organiser. The boat is in perfect shape as is the gear. shout out for crew Johnny as well. Great guy. They don't just take you to the perfect spots, they coach you in the technique for bait fishing (early morning adrenalin) to landing that big tuna and grabbing a snapper on the way home for dinner. But it does not stop there. Darren organised a Weighmaster on the way in to weigh that trophy and someone to cut it up, smoke it and send it home. In two words: "World Class".
Darren and his team were excellent. We had a fun time and caught plenty of fish. Would highly recommend Days Out to anyone. The equipment was of high standard, Darren was highly knowledgeable, personable and entertaining, they really took care of us and anticipated our needs, making sure everyone was comfortable, knew what to do (coaching!) and had a wonderful time. Thank you, 10/10!

very fun day of fishing with Captain Darren. Caught lots of tasty snapper, which we were able to take to a local restaurant to fry up for us for lunch before we boarded pur cruise ship. Bay of Islands is gorgeous, and we would love to rerturn and fish again with Captain Darren!
Darren was a great guide. Caught my Pb Snapper and Kingfish. Boat was great and all fish expertly filleted. Also saw big pod od dolphin. Great day allround.

He later engaged in commercial tuna fishing. Eventually, Capt. Darren has come back to his native fisheries and has run charter fishing trips forvover 30 years. He has accommodated many repeat customers. His vessel is one of the finest in the area. Capt. Darren will work to put you on fish and make your trip an enjoyable adventure.
