About the Captain

Captain Michael Oppegaard comes from a fishing family. His grandparents owned a “fish camp” on Lea Island (Old Topsail) before WWII so the family ties started before the island was even developed. Michael’s grandfather expanded the Sound Pier only three years after he purchased it in 1963. The family ran it successfully for four decades. So saying that Michael grew up with a fishing pole in his hand would be an understatement!

Capt Mike makes the most of your time. Service is in the name and he lives up to that in every aspect of your experience with him. He provides a very family friendly (for my experience ages 3 and up) environment that is oriented towards the customer having a great time and bringing in fish. He seemingly effortlessly tailors your trip to your needs or wishes. I am local to the area and fish on my own. However, it is nice to get with Mike a few times a year to be exposed to his wealth of knowledge and experience. He has the knowledge to put you right where the fish are, he provides all the equipment to catch them when you get there, and he provides good company and shares great stories while on the water. I have recommended many friends that always boast about their experiences and offer gratitude for recommending his charter services. Whether you are visiting from out of town or a local looking for an easy way to get on the water I enthusiastically recommend Native Son Guide Service. Thank you for all the great times Captain Mike!

Had a great day fishing with Captain Mike. He has a great knowledge of the local area. Put me on some nice reds and biggest trout I have ever caught. Highly recommend. Can’t wait to go on another trip.
