Fishing in Samoa

Experience world-class big game fishing in Samoa, a tropical paradise renowned for its thrilling year-round angling opportunities. Samoa's waters teem with prized catches including Yellowfin Tuna, Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, and Giant Trevally. The islands of Upolu and Savai'i offer diverse fishing grounds where anglers target pelagic species through trolling, popping, and jigging techniques.

Professional charters provide well-equipped boats ranging from agile center-consoles to specialized sportfishing vessels. Many operators feature modern Shimano tackle, GPS navigation, and experienced crews who know the prime FAD locations and reef structures. Whether you prefer offshore battles with Marlin or inshore sportfishing for Trevally, Samoa delivers consistent action across its vibrant marine ecosystem.

Beyond the fishing, Samoa enchants with its warm hospitality and stunning South Pacific scenery. Resorts like Le Vasa and Saletoga Sands offer dedicated fishing charters with convenient jetty access, while traditional Samoan fishing techniques add cultural depth to your adventure. With consistently warm waters and professionally guided trips, Samoa stands as a premier destination for both novice and seasoned anglers seeking unforgettable tropical fishing experiences.

Samoa Fishing Seasons

January

It’s wet season in Samoa, and while the rain may deter some anglers from heading out to sea, those who do can enjoy excellent fishing for Marlin, Tuna, Sailfish, Wahoo, and more.

February

Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Sailfish, Marlin, Spanish Mackerel, and Dogtooth and Yellowfin Tuna are all biting vigorously at this time of year. Just be sure to keep an eye on the forecast in case of cyclones.

March

The weather usually starts calming down at this time of year, giving you a chance to head offshore if you haven’t yet. Your chances of landing anything from Tuna to Mackerel are relatively good.

April

The Samoan International Game Fishing Tournament takes place each year in late April or early May, bringing some of the planet’s best anglers to these waters for a week of intense game fishing.

May

Solid big game fishing continues in May. Most species are not at their peak, but you’ll still have a productive day on the water fishing for Tuna, Marlin, Mahi Mahi, and more.

June

Samoa’s dry season is well underway, which makes June an excellent time to head out to sea. You can expect good fishing for Sailfish, Blue and Black Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and more.

July

You can continue enjoying some of the Pacific’s finest big game fishing all through July, as Samoa’s dry season rolls on.

August

Samoa's Teuila Festival–one of the largest cultural festivals in the South Pacific–begins at the end of August, featuring traditional music, dances, crafts, and the Miss Samoa Pageant.

September

Come September, anglers can indulge in some of Samoa’s best fishing for Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, and virtually every other big game fish in these waters!

October

Every year in October or November, locals eagerly await the appearance of the Palolo sea worm. This “Pacific Caviar” rises to the water’s surface only for a few nights,  when people harvest it with hand nets.

November

Almost every local big game fish is still at its peak in November. Come catch a trophy before wet season sets in again!

December

You can enjoy excellent fishing for anything from Marlin and Tuna to Giant Trevally at this time of year. Just keep an eye on the weather as Samoa’s wet season gets underway.
