Fishing in Abu Dhabi

With gorgeous beaches and productive turquoise waters, it’s hardly a surprise that fishing in Abu Dhabi is nothing short of superb. You’ll find the capital of the United Arab Emirates nestled comfortably on the Persian Gulf – the playground of an array of colorful fish.

In the offshore waters, Hammour is the local favorite (aka Brown Spotted Reef Cob) and among the most frequent (and delicious) catches on fishing charters. If you’re looking for a bit more of a challenge, King Mackerel, Queenfish, various Snapper species, and Barracuda are very popular and fun to catch.

The big game fishing season in Abu Dhabi starts in October and lasts until late April. This gives you plenty of time to explore the deep waters for Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Sailfish, Marlin, Trevally, and even Marlin. Bear in mind that every fish has its own timing, so if there’s a particular species you’d like to target, it’s best to consult with a local guide when you book your trip.

After that, you just have to decide how long you want your trip to last. Half day excursions (4–5 hours) seem to always be in demand, but full day expeditions don’t fall far behind. It’s all a matter of preference and how much time you’ve got.

Rules & Regulations

If you book a local charter, you can expect your fishing license to be included in the price. If you plan to fish without a professional guide, you’ll need to pay a fee and submit some documents to the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency to get a weekly license. Make sure you’re up to date on local rules and regulations ahead of time.

Your fishing adventure on the Persian Gulf awaits, and chances are, Abu Dhabi will not disappoint!

Abu Dhabi Fishing Seasons

January

If you’re looking to escape icy winter days and enjoy good fishing, Abu Dhabi has a lot to offer in January. King Mackerel is biting, as well as Barracuda, Snapper, Grouper, and Trevally.

February

Even though big game fish aren’t visiting the local waters just yet, there are plenty of other favorites to chase. Grunt, Yellowtail Snapper, Silver Trevally, Queenfish, and King Mackerel are all in the cards.

March

In March, fishing action continues to impress, with Mahi Mahi and Goliath Grouper coming out to play, and King Mackerel, Barracuda, Queenfish, and many more following closely behind.

April

Spring is here, and so are Marlin and Sailfish! Blue Marlin, along with its Black and Striped cousins, are coming back to Abu Dhabi waters, and Mahi Mahi, Grouper, and Snapper are also there for the taking.

May

It’s getting quite hot on the waves, so you better come aboard with plenty of sun protection. Mahi Mahi are roaming the offshore depths, as well as Queenfish, Trevally, and King Mackerel.

June

It’s officially summertime, and the best option is to hit the water early in the morning to avoid the heat. From Yellowfin Tuna and Sailfish to Mahi Mahi, Blue Marlin, and Goliath Grouper, there’s plenty of fish to target and hook.

July

‘Tis the Billfish season! If you’re coming to Abu Dhabi to find your trophy Marlin or Sailfish, this is the month to make it happen. Other popular catches include Mahi Mahi, Tuna, and Grunt.

August

While the local fish aren’t that fond of the hotter-than-usual waters, for Yellowfin Tuna, Sailfish, Blue Marlin, and Mahi Mahi, high temperatures are the perfect setting to come out and play. You can hook any of them this time of year.

September

Very slowly, the unyielding heat is becoming much more manageable and there are more and more species out and about. Whatever you’d like to catch, from Bream to Grunt, from Grouper to Sailfish, it could find its way to your line in September.

October

Come October, the usual suspects like Silver Trevally, Queenfish, Grunt, and Barracuda are up for grabs, as well as Goliath Grouper and Mahi Mahi. You can still find Tuna and Billfish, but they’re not that present anymore.

November

King Mackerel fishing is excellent in November, and Yellowtail Snapper, Mahi Mahi, Grunt, and many more are also quite hungry. The weather is warm and pleasant, giving you near-perfect fishing conditions.

December

If you’re looking to treat yourself for New Year’s, a fishing trip in Abu Dhabi, away from all the snow and cold, is definitely something to consider. Have an enjoyable time on the water fishing for Sailfish, King Mackerel, Queenfish, Trevally, Grunt, and the list goes on.
