Fishing in Gold Coast

When a city is named the Gold Coast, a picture of a place framed with sandy beaches and gorgeous waters comes to mind. Nestled on Australia's east coast and hugged by the Coral Sea, the Gold Coast is a great vacation destination and an even better fishing spot. If you don't believe it, one trip with Golden Coast fishing charters will change your mind.

With over 40 miles of coastline, the city is an epicenter of angling activity. Whether you're in the mood for deep sea fishing, reef exploration, or inshore opportunities, you've come to the right place. Come in the summer months, and you'll be blown away by the premier Black Marlin bite and pelagics like Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Mackerel, Sailfish, and Yellowfin Tuna in the fall.

Reef fishing is just as productive, with an impressive array of species to target. The reefs are a playground for Yellowtail, Snapper, Cobia, Pearl Perch, Tailor, and Amberjack, among many others. Mangrove Jacks, Flathead, Tailor, and Trevally hang out closer to shore, which is perfect when going offshore isn't advisable.

Because fishing opportunities are so diverse here, there's no shortage of experienced skippers to take you to your catch. Gold Coast fishing charters organize trips that can last anywhere from 3–10 hours and often there are specialized expeditions on offer as well. A half day excursion is enough to fish the reefs, while longer trips are perfect for deep sea runs.

It's recommended that you book your charter a couple of months in advance. Alternatively, you can head to Main Beach and pick one of the charter boats from the lineup.

Rules & Regulations

When you're casting a line in Queensland, you don't need a fishing license for recreational fishing. Bear in mind that size and possession limits apply to a variety of fish species, so make sure to follow the rules.

Gold Coast Fishing Seasons

January

January kicks off with some of the best deep sea fishing you'll find all year. Black Marlin are abundant at the beginning of the month, with plenty of other game fish in tow, including Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Mackerel, and Mahi Mahi.

February

There's a lot of Blue Marlin offshore, so if you don't mind the trip, you'll have a blast. Black Marlin catches start to thin out, but don't worry, there's plenty of Mackerel, Wahoo, and Sailfish to keep you busy. Pearl Perch is coming into season.

March

As fall settles in, the fishing changes. Game fishing is focusing more on Yellowfin and Mackerel Tuna, with Wahoo still giving anglers a run for their money. If you hit the reefs, you'll have a lot of fun reeling in a variety of Snapper.

April

The water temperatures drop but the action heats up around the reefs. Amberjack, Cobia, Snapper, Pearl Perch, and Yellowtail Kingfish are up for grabs when bottom fishing or jigging. This is a great time of year to fish the Gold Coast.

May

The fantastic reef fishing continues, only improved by the reappearance of Yellowfin Tuna offshore. The talk of the town is the Humpback Whales' migration. Time it right, and you might enjoy excellent fishing and whale watching on the same trip.

June

It may officially be winter, but that doesn't stop the Gold Coast from dazzling visitors with its famously pleasant climate and sunny weather. And the fishing is better than ever over the reefs, with monster Cobia, Pearl Perch, Snapper, and Trevally in the cards.

July

Some say winter is the best time for fishing around the Gold Coast. The weather is warm, there are fewer people on the water, and there's plenty of fish. As well as Cobia, Snapper, and Tuna at the reefs, Tailor and Flathead are caught inshore.

August

If you're a Flathead fan, get on down to the Gold Coast! The Dusky Flathead – one of Australia's favorite fish – is schooling in preparation to spawn. Whales are being sighted and Sharks are following close behind, so you'll have some competition when battling your prey.

September

Spring is in the air, which means mild tropical evenings and sunny days. Sometimes in September, winds don't make it easy to go offshore, but that's ok. Look for Cobia, Pearl Perch, Pink Snapper, and Sweetlip Emperor over the reefs, you won't be disappointed.

October

As the currents warm, the migratory patterns change. There are fewer sharks out there and plenty of Wahoo, Tuna, Trevally, and Flathead. Sport fishers are polishing up their gear in preparation for the big game season.

November

As warm bluewater currents start moving southwards down the coastline, sportfishing boats come up against Wahoo as well as Yellowfin Tuna. Things are still going strong around the reefs, where you can hook into Jacks, Snapper, and Trevally.

December

It's summertime and living is far from easy – if you're a game fish, that is. This is the season for both Blue and Black Marlin, as well as Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Mackerel, and Wahoo. Catching your next record might just be the best thing to give yourself this Christmas!
