Fishing in Southport

When you’re in Southport, fishing should definitely be on your to-do list. Whether you want to catch Pink Snapper at the reefs or land a Marlin far offshore, you’ll have your chance here. Most fishing guides start their trips at the marina, right in the city center, across the famous Broadwater Parklands. The marina has easy access to offshore spots and you won’t have to ride through the shallows very long.

Southport Fishing Trips

Reef Fishing

Not far from the shore, you’ll reach reefs that are rich with popular fish species. This is where you can target Pink Snapper, Sweetlip Emperor, Mackerel, Bream, and others. One of the things to consider when you’re booking a trip is the season. For example, Snapper fishing is best when the temperature drops during winter. There’s always something to catch, especially inshore, you just need to know which fish species are best to target when you’re here.

Big Game Fishing

For more experienced – or simply more adventurous – anglers, deep sea fishing trips are a real treat. There’s plenty of extended trips available, with some of them lasting longer than 10 hours. You can target feisty predators such as Marlin, Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, and more. As these trips mostly take place during summer, make sure to bring hats and sunscreen.

Budget-Friendly Options

Most fishing guides in the area offer both private and shared trips. This makes choosing a trip so much easier and flexible. If you’re fishing alone or you simply don’t have a group large enough to book the whole boat for yourselves, shared trips are the perfect solution.

Need to Know

  • You don’t have to purchase a fishing licence when you book a trip with a local skipper.

  • If you’re travelling from abroad, the easiest way to reach Southport is by flying into Brisbane Airport. After that, it’s just an hour’s ride to the city.

A fishing trip in Southport is sure to make your stay a memorable one. Just a few miles away, you’ll find the Gold Coast, one of Australia’s most popular holiday destinations. After your fishing trip, wander along the seaside, visit the Aquatic Centre, or one of the exotic restaurants. Visit Southport and take your holiday to the next level.

Southport Fishing Seasons

January
Start the year on a high note! January is one of the best months to go on a big game fishing trip. Black and White Marlin, Sailfish, and Yellowfin Tuna are present in huge numbers.

February
Big game fishing still dominates the area. Whether you’re after Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Marlin, or Wahoo, you’ll have a great time trying to land them.

March
Offshore trips give you the best chance of catching Mahi Mahi and Blue Marlin, but nearshore fishing gets more interesting. You’ll notice more Bonito and Coral Trout in the area.

April
April means new fish species are on the rise. This is a great chance to target Yellowtail Amberjack, Bonito, Mackerel, or Sharks.

May
Other than Blue Marlin, it seems that nothing is going on in the world of big game fishing at this point. Stay closer to the shore and target Coral Trout, Bonito, and Hammerhead Shark.

June
The reefs are the best fishing grounds this time of year. You can target Pink Snapper, Coral Trout, or Sweetlip Emperor in their peak season.

July
Great reef fishing continues in July, while there’s still very little fishing action to be found offshore. The fish may not be huge, but they’re not easy to catch either!

August
Pink Snapper still dominate the fishing season, joined by Sweetlip Emperor, Trevally, Coral Trout, and Amberjack.

September
While the quality of reef fishing stays the same, the offshore waters offer more fish than in previous months.

October
October is a transition month – reef fishing slows down, while big game fish show up in great numbers. If you missed Sailfish and Marlin, now is the time to go for them.

November
Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, and Tuna fishing become better with each week passing. And let’s not forget three types of Marlin you can catch in the area.

December
This is the prime time for several fish species: Cobia, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, and Mackerel. It hardly gets better than this.
