Top Fishing Charters in Mississauga

Fishing in Mississauga

The Mississauga fishing scene enjoys all the riches Lake Ontario offers. Best known for its amazing Salmon fishing opportunities, the local fishing spots are also full of different types of Trout and Bass. Most fishing charters are available from late April till the end of October, so head out to the marina as soon as the weather gets warm.

What to Expect

Your fishing trip will launch from Port Credit, a district in Mississauga that’s also known as the “Village on the Lake.” From there, you’ll head out to Lake Ontario and start fishing only a few miles off the coast. Great fishing spots can be found right at the marina’s doorstep, so you won’t spend much time traveling.

Mississauga fishing trips usually focus on trolling. One of the advantages is that you can catch most of the local species using this technique. Depending on the season, the style might change a bit, which means you could be either flat-lining or using downriggers. Lures vary from spoons and plugs to spinners.

Chinook and Coho Salmon rule these waters! The best time to catch them is in the spring and fall, when they migrate. When these fast runs happen, it’s best to fish around the mouth of the Credit River. Brown, Lake, and Rainbow Trout can be found in shallow water in spring and further offshore when it becomes warm, during summer. Even when these fish haven’t reached their full size yet, they can put up an amazing fight, jump out of the water, splash, and keep the reel singing for an hour. It’s a trophy worth fighting for!

Getting here

Finding Mississauga won’t be hard – this is Ontario’s third-largest city and shares a border with Toronto. Interestingly, Toronto Pearson International Airport is largely located in Mississauga, despite its name.

Need to Know

  • All anglers must have an Outdoors licence and a valid fishing licence. Depending on the amount of catch you want to keep, you opt for a sport  fishing licence (normal catch limits) or a conservation licence  (reduced catch limits). All licences can be purchased online, at ServiceOntario offices, and at authorized licence issuers.
  • Canadian residents can fish without a fishing licence on four occasions throughout the year. This happens during Mother’s Day weekend, Father’s Day weekend, Family Fishing weekend in February, and Family Fishing week in June.
  • The province of Ontario is split into 20 Fisheries Management Zones. Mississauga falls under region No. 16 – make sure to check fish limits and seasonality for this region, especially if you’re thinking of fishing in the Credit River.

Your adventure doesn’t end when you return to the marina! Port Credit is also known as a culinary district, so be sure to experience its exceptional dining scene. Sit in a waterfront restaurant with a view, let the professionals prepare the fish you caught, and have them serve it to you in the tastiest way possible. What better way to end a successful fishing day?

Mississauga Fishing Seasons

Credit River is closed for fishing but there’s lots of action in Lake Ontario, under the ice. You’re most likely to catch Walleye and Steelhead.

Come out and enjoy February’s Family Fishing Weekend, when Canadian residents are welcome to wet a line without the need for a fishing licence. Dress warm and bring your loved ones to the marina.

March brings more opportunities to catch Lake Trout, Steelhead, and Walleye. You’re most likely going to catch them using minnows, spinners, and crankbaits.

This is when things get much more interesting, as life in the lake starts getting more active. As it’s still not warm enough, fish will stick to the shallow waters – search for fishing spots close to shore.

May includes another special weekend for  Canadian residents – Mother’s Day weekend allows you to fish without a fishing licence. Lots of Salmon to catch!

The peak season for Salmon has started! As usual, Father’s Day weekend and Family Fishing Week allow all Canadian residents to fish without a fishing licence.

Troll, troll, troll! As it gets warmer, fish will go to the deeper water. The best way to catch Salmon is by trolling spoons near schools of bait fish.

Summer is also the time when Trout species reach their peak. Like Salmon, they also go offshore during hot months. Walleye and Bass are also at their highest point.

As the summer comes to an end, fish move back to shallow water. Stay close to the mouth of the Credit River and catch lots of Salmon, Trout, and Walleye.

Salmon start their upstream run, so huge numbers of them move towards the city. This is the last chance to catch a bunch of Cohos and Chinooks before they reach the Credit River.

Walleye and Lake Trout are still good to target in the inshore waters. However, most local captains ended their season in the last week of October.

This is a slow month, as most of the boats are out of the water and it’s still not cold enough to go ice fishing.

Great trip. The lake is beautiful, but a bit choppy. If you are prone to motion sickness, take precautions!
