Fishing in Mississauga

The Mississauga fishing scene gives you access to all of Lake Ontario’s riches, as well as the Port Credit River. Although it’s Canada’s third largest city, escaping the hustle and bustle is easy in Mississauga – just hop aboard a fishing charter! With over 75 different fish species within its waterways, this year-round angling destination ticks all the boxes.

Chinook and Coho Salmon rule these waters. You’ll find incredible runs of these delicious fish in the spring and fall. In the remaining seasons, expect to hook into Lake, Brown, and Rainbow Trout, Northern Pike, and Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass.

Mississauga fishing trips vary in length and are easy to tailor to your needs. If you want to take full advantage of those productive spring and fall Salmon runs, opt for a full day trip to max out on your limits. If you’re looking to hone your skills or introduce the family to fishing in a friendly environment, a half day trip should do the trick.

The number one place to head to if you’re looking for a fishing charter is Port Credit. Called “Village on the Lake” by locals, this quaint community boasts great restaurants, shopping, and best of all – a bustling marina. Other popular launch points include Meadowvale Conservation Area, Riverwood, and Erindale Park.

Rules & Regulations

Before hopping aboard your fishing charter, be sure to purchase a valid Ontario fishing license for any angler over the age of 18. Ontario is divided into 20 Fisheries Management zones where possession limits vary. To ensure you’re fishing within the law, it’s best to head out with a reputable guide.

Mississauga Fishing Seasons

January

The Credit River is closed for fishing but there’s lots of action in Lake Ontario, under the ice. Stay in shallower areas, weather permitting, and you may hook into Walleye and Pike.

February

Come out and enjoy February’s Family Fishing Weekend, when Canadian residents are welcome to wet a line without the need for a fishing licence. Dress warm and bring your loved ones to the marina.

March

March brings more opportunities to catch Lake Trout, Steelhead, and Walleye. You’re most likely going to catch them using minnows, spinners, and crankbaits.

April

This is when things get much more interesting, as life in the lake starts getting more active. The waters aren't warming up just yet, so coldwater fish are your best targets.

May

May includes another special event for  Canadian residents – Mother’s Day weekend! You can fish without a license and pursue the likes of Brook, Brown, and Lake Trout.

June

The peak season for Salmon has started! The wish are congreating in the nearshore waters of the Credit River so get there quick. You can also fish license-free on Father’s Day weekend.

July

Troll, troll, troll! As it waters warm up, the Salmon make their way into deeper waters. Head up to 12 miles offshore where you can fish depths at 300+ feet.

August

Summer is also when Trout species reach their peak. Like Salmon, they also go offshore during hotter months. Walleye and Bass are reliable tagets.

September

As the summer comes to an end, fish move back to shallow water. Stay close to the mouth of the Credit River to hook spawning Chinook Salmon.

October

Salmon start their upstream run, so huge numbers of them move towards the city. This is your last chance to hook both Coho and Chinook before they're gone for good.

November

Walleye and Lake Trout are still good inshore targets. Lake Ontario's waters are choppy in the winter, though, and most local captains have closed shop for the season.

December

This is a slow month, as most of the boats are out of the water and it’s still not cold enough to go ice fishing. Get in on the Christmas festivites in downtown Toronto's Distillery District instead.
