Fishing in Oakville

Nestled between Toronto and Hamilton, Oakville is a town known for its charming harbors, galleries, and restaurants. It sits on the western basin of Lake Ontario, meaning it’s also home to a whole host of first-class species. Head out on an Oakville fishing trip and you’ll be amazed at what these waters have to offer.

This freshwater haven is rich with fish that are both fun to catch and delicious to eat. In the spring and fall, target coveted Chinook and Coho Salmon. You can also add Lake, Brook, and Brown Trout to your list. Looking for year-round targets? Walleye Pike, and Yellow Perch are yours for the taking.

Oakville is home to a large charter fleet and there are plenty of trip options to choose from. If you want to troll for your Salmon limits, opt for a full day trip and make the most out of battling these fierce fish. Only got half a day to spare? That’s ok too! Brush up on your skills and go home with a few Trout. If you’re willing to brave the cold, head out on a specialized ice fishing trip in winter!

When it comes to the best places to fish and find a charter in Oakville, you’ll also have plenty of options. The Bronte Harbor houses vessels of all shapes and sizes, and nearby creeks, including the Sixteen Mile Creek and Bronte Creek, are great fishing spots to check out!

Rules & Regulations

Whichever species you’d like to go after, a valid Ontario fishing license is a must for all anglers between the ages of 18–64. If you’re unfamiliar with the ins and outs of Ontario fishing management zones, it’s best to head out with a reputable captain.

Oakville Fishing Seasons

January
January in Oakville usually brings rainy and cold weather. The boats are out of the water, but you can always find some ice-fishing action if you know where to look.

February
With fewer rainy days and higher temperatures than in January, February is perfect for ice fishing. While local boats are still out of the water, ice fishing is what's hot among anglers.

March
Warmer weather mid-March causes the ice to melt, and this means that fishing can also start to heat up. Trout, Perch, and Walleye are on the menu.

April
The fishing season finally begins, and the boats are back on the lake. Trout and Salmon fishing is heating up, with Steelhead fishing being especially good.

May
Fishing is getting better and better as the weather is getting warmer. Trout and Salmon are in the cards, with Brown and Lake Trout fishing at their best.

June
The prime Salmon season begins in June and lasts through August. This is also the month of Oakville Family Ribfest – nothing better after a day spent fishing with your loved ones.

July
Trout and Salmon action is still going strong in July. The beginning of the month is also when the annual Great Ontario Salmon Derby starts – don't miss a chance to set a record!

August
Salmon are peaking in August. The end of the month is also the end of the Great Ontario Salmon Derby – still not too late to get into the hall of fame.

September
Steelhead are still possible to catch, while Lake and Brown Trout are dominating the lake again after May. Salmon are going stronger again, especially when it comes to Credit River.

October
This is usually the last month for most of the boats on the lake. Steelhead fishing is good, but your best bet is to focus on Lake and Brown Trout.

November

November will put most of the charter boats out of the water, but that doesn't mean that all the action has to stop. Grab a rod and fight the cold!

December
The lake begins to freeze in December, but it's still not the time for ice-fishing season to start – you'll have to wait until January.
