Top Fishing Charters in Puerto Plata

No matter how much time you dedicate to your Puerto Plata fishing adventure, you’ll still want more. This is easily one of the best fishing destinations in the Caribbean, with a whopping 25,000 Billfish hookups per year. Locally known as “The Bride of the Atlantic,” Puerto Plata is home to some of the most intense and rewarding fishing action you’ll find in this part of the world.

Not to much surprise, Billfish are the most prized catches here, with Sailfish, Striped, and White Marlin prowling the nearshore waters mere miles from land. For avid Billfishers, this is about the best news they can get, which is why they flock to Puerto Plata in great numbers. Mahi Mahi and Tuna are also known to come close to shore, so you can have your pick of catches.

All this is just to get you warmed up for the offshore action. Deep sea fishing out of Puerto Plata needs no introduction, and this is where Blue Marlin chasers come to break their personal records. Multiple FADs (fish aggregating devices) attract these giants and make for the best spots for targeting them. Swordfish, Wahoo, and big Tuna are also there for the taking.

The best thing you can do f when getting ready for your Puerto Plata fishing experience is to book a local professional to take you out. Half day trips are perfect for family outings, while full day options will take you to the bluewater in search of monster fish.To find a local charter to fulfill your angling ambitions, head to the Ocean World Marina and Sosua Beach, or book your trip online.

Rules & Regulations

In Puerto Plata, whether you’re fishing solo or with a guide, you don’t need a fishing license. Bear in mind that all Billfish are strictly catch and release.

January

The new year in Puerto Plata starts with a bang as far as fishing is concerned. Swordfishing is on fire and will be for the next couple of months. In fact, just about anything is biting right now, including Snapper, Mahi Mahi, and Barracuda.

February

The Dominican Republic celebrates its Independence Day on February 27. After you’re done fishing for Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Swordfish, or Sailfish, be sure to join in on the fun, especially for the Carnival.

March

In March, White Marlin fishing really goes into overdrive. You can find them all over the shoreline, so you can get a lot done even on a short trip. Swordfishing is still on fire!

April

The White Marlin craze continues, with double-digit releases being the norm. Going further off in search of Blackfin Tuna is also an option for ambitious anglers, and if you like staying closer to shore, Mahi Mahi, Barracuda, and Snapper are always hungry.

May

Things tend to calm down a bit this time of year as people are waiting for the Marlin season to hit. The fish are not sleeping though, and going after bottom feeders like Snapper, Grouper, and Barracuda on the reefs is a good idea.

June

Prepare to see a lot of anglers heading off to the FADs for the next couple of months. Blue Marlin are about to come in force and, if you’d like to get some practice, target White Marlin a few miles from the shore.

July

Welcome to some of the best Marlin fishing on the entire planet! And it’s not just Marlin action that’s hot hot hot, there’s also plenty of Snapper and Barracuda to go around if you’re up for some bottom fishing.

August

Most anglers will be spending their August chasing after Blue Marlin, so be sure to join them if you have the chance. The Barracuda and King Mackerel bite is also strong, and you could also hook into Amberjack aka the “Reef Donkey.”

September

Get ready for really hot days on the water during September – but don’t sweat it! The abundance of fish will be worth the effort. Put some sunscreen on and hit the waves in search of majestic Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, or Snapper and Barracuda.

October

Everything must come to an end sooner or later, and that includes the Blue Marlin season. On the bright side, the Sailfish bite is picking up, and there are pelagics galore for your pleasure, so the fun never ends.

November

This is a good time of year to do some fly fishing for Bonefish and maybe even some Snook. Alternatively, head offshore for some awesome Wahoo, Sailfish, and Mahi Mahi action, and enjoy!

December

December is probably the best time to go Sailfishing in Puerto Plata. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better way to end the year as an angler. Want a bit of variety? Anything from Mahi Mahi and Bonito to Snapper and Wahoo is biting this month.
