Fishing in Mauritius

Mauritius is famous for its one-of-a-kind flora and fauna, stunning mountains, and pristine beaches. It’s also the place where some of your angling dreams could turn into a reality. With access to reefs and banks that are teeming with fish, Mauritius fishing charters know where to go to help customers catch some trophies.

There are many different species you could target in this stretch of the Indian Ocean. However, many anglers come to Mauritius for the chance to catch Billfish. Big specimens of Blue, Black, and Striped Marlin are caught in these waters every year. Besides these, you can also hook into majestic Sailfish and Shortbill Spearfish.

Luckily, the fishing opportunities don’t stop there. If you’re a Tuna fan, you’ll be glad to hear these waters are home to Skipjack, Dogtooth, and the prestigious Yellowfin Tuna. Some of the other species you may come across are delicious Mahi Mahi, powerful Giant Trevally, Barracuda, Wahoo, and others.

Mauritius features year-round fishing but the best time to catch a Billfish is between November and March. For the best chance at a trophy, you’ll want a full day trip. On shorter outings, you can expect to reel in species such as Mahi Mahi, Bonito, and various reef fish. Charter captains are distributed all along the coast of Mauritius. The most popular starting spots are Black River, Le Morne, and Grand Baie.

Rules & Regulations

Whether you’re fishing aboard a charter in Mauritius or casting from shore, you won’t need a fishing license to do so. Just keep in mind that spearfishing is illegal on the island. Usually, the fish you catch on your trip belongs to the boat. However, you’re more than welcome to ask your captain to keep some fish for dinner.

Mauritius Fishing Seasons

January

January is your last chance to enjoy peak Wahoo season. They’ll still be in the water, don’t worry, just not as much as we’d all like them to be.

February

The Marlin bite is absolutely on fire the first few months of the year. Add to that some tough Sailfish, and it’s an offshore fishing paradise all the way.

March

It’s around early spring that the Skipjack and Yellowfin Tuna season really gets going. If Tuna’s not really your thing, there’ll be plenty of Marlin down in Le Morne.

April

Culinary addicts should make sure to check out the annual Bernard Loiseau culinary festival. Nothing like a bit of fishing beforehand to work up an appetite.

May

The Yellowfin bite is still going strong this time of year. As the summer starts rolling in, expect Mahi Mahi to be all over the place.

June

Fishing for big pelagics is fun. Not least because you’re already fishing within minutes of heading out. Mahi Mahi and Barracuda will be your main targets.

July

If you know your way around a kayak as well, the Mauritius Ocean Classic is sure to be worth your time. This annual race draws in kayak enthusiasts from all over the world.

August

If you’re a fan of Sharks, Mauritius becomes Hammerhead central come August. Alternatively, the water is full of various pelagic species.

September

Come September, we welcome the start of peak Wahoo season. Coupled with Marlin, Mahi, and Tuna, it’s a seller’s market out there for any interested offshore angler.

October

October is party time in Mauritius! But before you head off to the numerous music festivals, why not also partake in some fantastic fishing in the morning.

November

If you’re in the market for Dogtooth Tuna, now’s your time to shine. Who knows, maybe you’ll be the next local record breaker! The stage is set to give it your best.

December

December is when the Blue Marlin bite starts going off the charts, both in Le Morne and elsewhere on the island. Get on the water and make the best of the time you have!
