Fishing in Puerto Aventuras

When it comes to Puerto Aventuras, the name says it all. With access to some of the most productive offshore fishing grounds, nearshore reefs, and inshore flats, this town really is a port of adventures. Anglers from far and wide travel to this area to get a piece of the action. Before planning your trip, be sure to keep reading to find out which Puerto Aventuras fishing charter is right for you!

Known For

Fishing in Puerto Aventuras is diverse and comes in many different forms. Whether you’re looking to head offshore, bottom fish over reefs, or fly fish in shallow waters, this town’s got it all.

Deep Sea Fishing

The best part about fishing in Puerto Aventuras is that you don’t have to travel too far to start experiencing some excellent offshore action. The 12 miles of water between the coast and the island of Cozumel produce great opportunities for catching big pelagic fish. This narrow stretch of water funnels offshore Caribbean species right through town. This makes the area a prime spot for hooking Sailfish, White and Blue Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Blackfin Tuna, and Wahoo.

The probability of landing multiple Billfish on one trip is very high. If you’re looking to add a Grand Billfish Slam to your personal records – a Sailfish, Blue and White Marlin, and Swordfish, all in one day – Puerto Aventuras is the place to get it done. This will earn you respect from the most experienced captains in town and will also make a great profile picture for all your social media accounts!

Reef Fishing

You can’t talk about fishing in Puerto Aventuras without mentioning its amazing reef fishing. Year in and year out, this region has been placed among some of the world’s top destinations for diving, snorkeling, and bottom fishing. There are many charters that will take you to the southwest of Cozumel to bottom fish over Palancar Reef. This is a coral reef system that hosts a variety of bottom-dwelling species, such as Red and Black Grouper, Red Snapper, and Amberjack, as well as King Mackerel and Barracuda.

Inshore Fishing

Puerto Aventuras fishing charters offer excellent flats fishing opportunities for those looking to challenge themselves on light tackle. Fly fishing is also a very popular technique in this area due to the shallow waters, making it easy to spot fish. Top-targeted species include Bonefish, Snook, Permit, Jack Crevalle, Tarpon, and Goliath Grouper.

Need to Know

All anglers must have a valid fishing license before heading out. Most saltwater charters will provide your license and include it in the price of your trip. However, keep in mind that some inshore charters may require you to purchase your fishing license separately.

Most charters will also cover rods, reels, and tackle, and some will even provide snacks and drinks on board. Just remember to wear protective sun gear, including sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, and you’ll be good to go.

Get ready to experience some of the most productive fisheries off the coast of Quintana Roo. You’ve got everything you need, so start planning your getaway today, and pick the right charter for you!

Puerto Aventuras Fishing Seasons

January is an excellent time to go trolling for Kingfish, Wahoo, and Barracuda. If you plan on staying closer to shore, now is the time to go fly fishing for Bonefish on the flats.

Tell your captain to get the outriggers ready, as February produces solid numbers of Wahoo, Kingfish, Barracuda, and Swordfish. You can also head out to the island of Cozumel and jig for Amberjack or bottom fish for Grouper.

Sailfish migration begins around the full moon. They really start to pick up in April but you can still target them towards late March. Grab your fly gear and check out some flats fishing as well. You’ll be able to target Bonefish, Permit, Jack Crevalle, and Snook in the shallows around Puerto Aventuras.

April is a great month to try and complete a Grand Billfish Slam and catch Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, and Swordfish all in one day. Mahi fishing starts to pick up as well, so pick an offshore charter that will take you trolling for big game pelagics!

May is not only great for targeting Billfish but other pelagic species as well, such as Blackfin and Yellowfin Tuna. If you’re feeling competitive, take a short boat ride to Cozumel and check out the Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas.

June’s got plenty in store for everyone. Hit the flats for a fun day of fly fishing or head off the coast and deep drop for Tuna and Marlin. The possibilities are endless!

Inshore fishing is solid throughout the whole year but July might be one of the best months. Pull out the light tackle and attempt an Inshore Grand Sam and catch Tarpon, Bonefish, and Permit. If you’re really feeling lucky, add Snook to the list for a Super Grand Slam.

The number of Billfish starts to taper off in August but offshore fishing is still solid. You can still target King Mackerel, Barracuda, and Wahoo, as well as various Tuna species, such as Albacore.

September is Puerto Aventuras’ rainiest month, so just keep this in mind when planning your trip. This means there are fewer tourists on the beaches than usual, so surf fishing is especially favorable this time of year.

Billfishing practically comes to an end but no need to worry, October is all about the reef fishing! Hit the Palancar Reef and get ready to bottom fish for Black Grouper, Red Snapper, Amberjack, and many other exciting game fish.

Puerto Aventuras and surrounding villages host their Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations. This is an awesome opportunity for tourists to experience something other than fishing. Why not visit during one of Mexico’s most iconic holidays?

December is one of the driest and best months to visit and therefore, one of the most crowded times of year. Be sure to plan your trip ahead of time to secure a spot at one of the local hotels in the area.

The fish were not biting as well as I would have liked, but the captain and crew did their very best to put us in situations to get a catch and we caught 3 on our 4 hour trip.

Fishing at any time is always a 50/50 proposition. You can't go out and expect to land a specific species just because the charts say they are 'in season.'
