Fishing in Alameda

Fishing in Alameda is one of the things San Francisco Bay is known for. Located in the central part of the bay, “The Island City” also has easy access to the ocean, which makes the fishing scene more versatile. Among locals, one of the most visited fishing spots is the famous Alameda Rockwall, where you can target Halibut without technically leaving the city. Find a local fishing guide and discover other secret honey holes.

There’s always something to catch in Alameda but some seasons are better for certain species. You can target Sturgeon year round but you’ll get the best results in winter. On the other hand, Salmon, Rockfish, and Tuna offer the hottest bite in summer. During summer, most guides hunt using “potluck fishing,” which attracts all kinds of fish and you never know what’s going to bend your rod.

Another popular fish in the bay is Striped Bass. They may not be trophy-sized here, but there’s surely lots of them! Leopard Shark, White Seabass, and Lingcod are the usual targets if you’re staying in the bay. You’ll find these grounds to be productive even on a half day trip, but it’s better to take a full day trip if you’re planning to try a few different spots or even go offshore.

Most fishing guides in the bay offer shared trips, so you don’t have to give up on fishing the only one who wants to go. Join a crew, make new friends, and catch some fish on the way. Come fishing in Alameda and get the freshest fish meat, without even going to the market.

Alameda Fishing Seasons

January

Going after Sturgeon is the most fun you can get in January. You’ll have the best chances of catching them in San Pablo Bay.

February

Witness amazing Sturgeon acrobatics as you try to pull them closer to the boat! You can also catch Flounder and Leopard Shark.

March

Sturgeon, Flounder, and Sharks are still present in large numbers, but you’ll also notice more Striped Bass than before.

April

Striper fishing gets even better in April and you can go after them throughout the whole SF Bay. Nearshore trips can get you a good stash of Halibut.

May

To make your Striper fishing even better, let your guide take you close to the bridges in the bay.

June

Lingcod season is open, so don’t miss out! They may be ugly but their meat is very tasty. Take an inshore trip and you could land White Seabass.

July

Rockfish and Tuna are waiting for all anglers willing to leave the bay and go a few miles offshore. Take a full day trip for these targets.

August

Whether you go offshore for Tuna and Rockfish or stay in the bay for Striper, Halibut, and White Seabass, you can expect an amazing fishing trip.

September

Have you ever caught a turquoise Lingcod? Now is the time! They are unusual, rare, and, most importantly, still edible.

October

Use the last chance of the year to go after King Salmon! If you prefer fishing in the ocean, Tuna and Rockfish are still a great catch.

November

Lingcod, Halibut, and Leopard Shark are the best catches this time of year. In general, it’s more productive to fish in the bay.

December

Lots of Sturgeon can be found in the bay, so what are you waiting for?! If you like bottom fishing, Flounder is always a good choice.
