Fishing in Oceanside

Think of a Pacific paradise and a place like Oceanside immediately comes to mind. Palm trees, clear skies, and blue waters all provide the backdrop for this laid-back Southern California city. What’s more, it’s home to some serious angling action. Hop aboard an Oceanside fishing charter and you’ll have the chance to go after some of the state’s most sought-after game fish!

Whether you’re fishing inshore or heading far into the ocean, Oceanside delivers a variety of Pacific-dwelling fish. It’s home to plenty of kelp beds and is located along Southern California’s artificial reef system. This makes it a hotspot for Calico and Sand Bass, Rockfish, California Halibut, and White Seabass year-round. Head just a little further out, and you’ll also face off with the state’s most famous game fish – Yellowtail Amberjack.

If you’re in Oceanside during the summertime, however, you won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to go after Tuna. Skipjack, Albacore, Yellowfin, Bigeye, and mighty Bluefin Tuna all call these waters home. More interested in freshwater fishing? There are plenty of lakes scattered throughout the area that host Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Bluegill, and Crappie.

For an inshore or freshwater fishing adventure, a half day trip will see you heading home with a full cooler and sore arms. To take some giant Tuna home, however, set aside a full day and head towards Catalina and San Clemente Island. To find a charter boat best suited for your trip, check out Oceanside Harbor, the city’s hub for all things water sports.

Rules & Regulations

Oceanside fishing charters do not provide a fishing license for their customers. All anglers age 16 and older will need to purchase a California fishing license online or from a local retailer.

Oceanside Fishing Seasons

January

Your time in January is best spent fishing the inshore waters and lakes. Cast a few lines from the pier for Surfperch or fish the flats for Halibut and Seabass.

February

Sand Bass, Halibut, White Seabass, and Sculpin continue to dominate Oceanside’s winter fishery. Average temperatures are as high as 63°F, but strong winds and waves make offshore fishing a bit risky.

March

Winter weather continues, but don’t let that keep you away! Fish the inshore waters for Halibut, Seabass, and other Groundfish or head to the lakes for Largemouth Bass and more.

April

April marks the opening of Oceanside’s prime fishing season. Rockfish are open to harvest and Yellowtail and Barracuda are showing up closer to shore. It’s a great time to head farther out as soon as you can count on the weather.

May

By this time of year, everyone is getting hyped over the Tuna fishing offshore. Charter a boat for the day (or two!) and head to the islands offshore for some action-packed deep sea fishing.

June

Trips to the fishing grounds as far as 100 miles offshore are the norm by mid-summer. Bring home bragging rights to Yellowfin and Bluefin Tuna, or take advantage of the bottom fishing closer to home.

July

You can expect some of the hottest weather of the year here in Oceanside, with average temperatures reaching above 70°F. It’s the perfect time for a trip to Santa Catalina or the Coronado Islands!

August

With Mahi Mahi and Yellowtail swimming closer to shore than ever, you might have a chance at landing one of these game fish on a full day trip. For sheer numbers and variety, stick to the fishing grounds inshore.

September

Fall is a great time to bottom fish for Halibut, Lingcod, and other tasty delights. In some years, Tuna and Marlin pass close to shore for one last hurrah at the end of the summer season.

October

Temperatures are starting to cool off, but don’t let that give you the wrong idea. The fishing is still superb, with a chance to catch Yellowtail on trips as short as 5 hours if you’re lucky!

November

All of the migratory big game fish are scarce by now, which means it’s time to indulge in the fishing near shore. Halibut, Rockfish, Seabass, and much more are waiting.

December

A half day trip will have you fishing for Halibut, Rockfish, and Calico Bass. See what you reel in and grace your table with a special treat for the holidays!
