Fishing in San Pedro

If you’re looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, but still want to get in some great angling, consider giving San Pedro fishing a try. Home to one of the largest harbors in the nation, San Pedro is the LA area’s sportfishing hotspot. From inshore action to deep sea fishing, there’s something for everyone!

Novices will find suitable competitors in Bonito and Mackerel within the protected waters of the Los Angeles Harbor. Those with more experience, however, shouldn’t miss out on the excellent nearshore action. You’ll have the opportunity to hook Spotted Bay and Sand Bass, as well as California Halibut and a variety of Sharks.

San Pedro really shines when it comes to bluewater action. The continental shelf is just a few miles out of the port and you can be in more than 300 feet of water within 15 minutes. You can find many different species here, from Calico Bass to Yellowtail Amberjack. After even bigger competitors? Trolling the waters towards Catalina Island can put you on Mahi Mahi, Skipjack, Yellowfin, and Albacore Tuna.

Families with children and beginners will find that a half day trip within the waters of Los Angeles Harbor is the perfect way to get introduced to angling. If you want to take advantage of the nearshore or deep sea fishing action, you’ll definitely want to set aside enough time for at least a full day trip.

There are a ton of marinas to launch from within the Los Angeles Harbor. Head to Cabrillo Way Marina, Holiday Harbor Marina, or 22nd Street Marina for an abundance of choice.

Rules & Regulations

San Pedro fishing charters normally carry everything you need for a fun day on the water – except a fishing license. Anglers aged 16 and above need to purchase a license online, at some tackle shops, or large retail stores like Walmart.

San Pedro Fishing Seasons

January

Most of the charter captains are still moored but the reduced fishing pressure allows for good Halibut action inside LA Harbor. There’s some Tuna action offshore, the fish are usually up to 35 pounds heavy.

February

Calico Bass, White Seabass, Halibut, and Lobster make February all about sticking closer to shore. You can also land some Yellowtail Amberjack in deeper waters to the south of San Pedro.

March

The weather is warming up and the fishing is getting red-hot! Rockfish can be targeted, as can Californian Sheepshead. Lingcod, White Seabass, and various Sharks species are biting well.

April

The Lobster season closes in April so make sure to empty your traps before picking them up. Coastal fishing is intense with constant strikes from Halibut, Lingcod, Seabass, Rockfish, and other species.

May

As summer creeps up, the offshore bite is slowly getting better. You can reliably target Yellowtail Amberjack and Tuna is starting to get closer to shore. Nearshore fishing is still very good.

June

With warmer waters, Tuna have come in larger numbers. Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna are top targets in offshore waters, followed by Amberjack and Mahi Mahi. Barracuda, Halibut, Lingcod are still good.

July

The summer bluewater rush is in full swing in July. Marlin, Tuna, Barracuda, Mahi Mahi, Yellowtail Amberjack, and other species are red-hot. Make sure to bring sunglasses on your trip!

August

Halibut action outside of the LA Harbor is slowing down. Tuna are slowly starting to move further into the sea but Yellowtail and Bluefin Tuna are still reliable targets. If you haven’t hooked up a Marlin, now’s the time.

September

Pacific Barracuda is reliable target, as is Yellowtail Amberjack. If you plan on fishing around Catalina Island, be sure to wear layers as there’s a lot of wind.

October

Lobster is back on the menu! Other targets include Halibut, Lingcod, various species of Sharks, many different Rockfish, Calico Bass, Sand Bass, and others.

November

The weather isn’t fisher-friendly in November and most captains will put their boat on land during winter. If you head out, dress well – you’ll be rewarded with good Rockfish and California Sheepshead hook ups.

December

The year comes to a close and most of the fishing has almost entirely moved close to shore. There is some lingering Amberjack action further out but you can go after Rockfish, Seabass, and Lingcod close to the coast.
