Fishing in Tiburon

Located just a short boat ride away from San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the open waters of the Pacific Ocean, the Tiburon fishing scene offers superb action for anglers who prefer casting their lines away from the crowds. With San Francisco a stone's throw away, in Tiburon you get to mix up productive days on the water and crazy nights out on the town.

These brackish waters are home to many prized species, and catching any (or all!) of them is equally fun for anglers of all skill levels. Here, you can hook hard-fighting Striped Bass all year, and maybe even land your next trophy.

Chinook (King) Salmon pass the Tiburon Peninsula on their run to the spawning grounds in late summer and autumn, and having one on the line is always a rewarding experience. Add to that the possibility to catch delicious Halibut, magnificent Sturgeon, abundant Rockfish, and even Rays, and you've got a full package.

The foolproof way to find a good bite in Tiburon is to join a local charter captain. Most guides offer both private and shared trips, lasting anywhere from 4–12 hours. Shorter excursions will keep you in the bay, while longer expeditions will take you out into the ocean, to chase something bragworthy. Fishing equipment, the boat, and plenty of expert advice are included in the price of the charter.

Rules & Regulations

Tiburon Fishing Seasons

  • January

Winter fishing in the San Francisco Bay is very good and there's always something to catch. The Sturgeon bite is top-notch, with Flounder and Halibut following close behind.
  • February

It can get a bit windy out there, but that's nothing to worry about, just bring a light jacket to wear on your trip. Hit the water to get your share of delicious flatfish like Halibut and Flounder, or go head to gills with impressive-sized Sturgeon.
  • March

You'll find more and more anglers on the water in March, a lot of them looking for their next record Striper catch. Sturgeon chasers are out there too, Halibut and Flounder are very active, so there's plenty to do.
  • April

April marks the beginning of the Rockfish season, which is the best news for lovers of bottom fishing. Striped Bass action is at its peak and there are a lot of huge Halibut swimming around.
  • May

If by some miracle a variety of Rockfish, Striped Bass, and flatfish doesn't cut it for you, worry not, Chinook Salmon are a-coming! King Salmon fishermen love this time of year, because the fish are many and they're ready to bite.
  • June

This is, hands down, one of the best fishing months on the Tiburon fishing scene. Just about anything you'd like to target is out there, from lunker Striped Bass and Sturgeon to Salmon and Leopard Shark. What a time to cast a line!
  • July

There's a lot of fishermen both on the waters of the bay and offshore, but they've got a good reason – fishing is nothing short of superb! Chinook, Lingcod, and Halibut are the top catches in July.
  • August

If you're up for some offshore frolicking, you might be rewarded with a glorious Albacore Tuna on your line! Anglers staying closer to shore can enjoy the top-notch Chinook, Rockfish, and Halibut bite.
  • September

The vacation season is dwindling down, which means there are fewer anglers on the water, but fishing is still fantastic! Go bottom fishing for Halibut and Lingcod, or spend a day targeting Salmon and Striped Bass.
  • October

It's getting slightly colder outside, but that's nothing to be worried about. Catch as many Chinook as you can in October because the season closes by the end of the month.
  • November

Rockfishing is phenomenal in November, with copious amounts of Lingcod and Halibut out there for the taking. Shark fishing is a fun pastime if you're looking for a change of pace, as well as crabbing.
  • December

With the holiday season around the corner, Sturgeon are becoming the center of attention. Make the most of Lingcod fishing while you can, because the season closes soon, so stock up on those delicious Lingcod fillets!
