Fishing in Trinity River
Located in Northwest California, the Trinity River winds its way from the remote Trinity Alps all the way to the town of Weitchpec, where it meets the Klamath River. It journeys through a whole host of picturesque fishing villages, where you’ll find a variety of local and experienced Trinity River fishing guides just waiting to take you out on the water.
Considered the most famous tributary of the Klamath River, the Trinity is home to a trio of freshwater-favorites: Steelhead, Chinook Salmon, and Coho Salmon. You’ll get to cast off alongside your guide using conventional spinning gear, or can test your skills against these species on the fly. There’s even a stretch of the river beneath the Lewiston Dam that’s purely dedicated to fly fishing!
Trinity River fishing guides offer a range of adventures targeted towards anglers of all ages and skill levels, with trips usually running from 4–8 hours. It’s also common for guides to offer species-specific trips, so if there’s one fish you really want to hook, you’ll be able to spend your entire day on the river chasing it!
When it comes to choosing where to explore the river from, you’ll find a variety of locations dotted around the banks of the river, such as Weitchpec and Junction City. The historic fishing town of Lewiston, however, is one of the most popular destinations, with plenty of fishing guides to choose from. It also provides direct access to the fly-fishing-only stretch of the river, making this a must-visit for fly fanatics.
All anglers over the age of 16 who’d like to fish the Trinity River need to purchase a valid fishing license, as well as Salmon and Steelhead stamps. Luckily, your fishing guide will provide everything else you need, including local knowledge regarding the area’s catch and keep regulations.
