Fishing in Bethany Beach

The small fishing town of Bethany Beach comes alive in summer when the population swells from 1,000 to over 15,000. Holiday-makers swarm to the sandy beaches, while avid anglers can take a trip to the deep waters of the Atlantic. Fishing in Bethany Beach is a joy to behold, with plenty of different options for anglers of all abilities.

Types of Fishing

Bethany Beach is often overlooked due to the number of charters available just 14 miles south in Ocean City, MD. However, a trip out of the Delaware coast will see you fishing the same waters. From the inshore shallows to the deep seas offshore, there's plenty on offer.

Inshore Fishing

From Rehoboth Bay in the north to Little Assawoman Bay on the border with Maryland, exciting and productive fishing awaits in the shallows. These calm waters are ideal for beginners to learn to cast, while avid anglers can reel in plenty of delicious fish to take home. Expect a hands-on experience as you bottom fish to entice the bite of Bluefish, Croakers, Stripers, and Triggerfish, or you can also troll for Bluefish, Kingfish, and Bonito along the beaches.

Reef Fishing

It's not just in tropical climates that you can find productive reef fishing. Some of the best artificial reefs in the US come in the Atlantic's waters some 20–40 miles offshore. Head out aboard a powerful boat and fish the structures underwater where the fish like to feed. Triggerfish, Flounder, and Rockfish are just some of the prized creatures that you'll target here as you try to fill the boat with something to treat yourself.

Deep Sea Fishing

The Atlantic Ocean offers up world-class fishing, and you don't even have to go all the way to the continental shelf! You'll still need at least 10 hours on the water to reach the sweet spots, but it's definitely worth it to get your hands on some of the ocean's most sought-after creatures. Hit up the 'Jackspot' around 30 miles out or head to the canyons another 30 miles away and battle it out with a number of monster Sharks, Marlin, Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and even Swordfish.

How to Prepare

If you're heading offshore, you'll most likely be fishing from a serious offshore sportfishing vessel. These powerful machines come fitted with everything you need for a productive day out and there'll be plenty of covered space for you to keep comfortable.

On inshore charters, you may find yourself on a smaller boat without even a toilet, so make sure to prepare accordingly. On all trips, you'll need to bring your own food and drink to stay refreshed, but the captain will usually have a cooler on board.

Other than that, all you need to bear in mind is that you'll need a fishing license before stepping aboard. Grab yours online or in any sporting goods store and you're good to go. Come and experience the East Coast's famous fisheries with a Bethany Beach fishing charter!

Bethany Beach Fishing Seasons

  • January

It's time to get the boats ready for the season, so you won't find much in the way of charters in Bethany Beach. Why not make the most of the warming seafood in some of the town's revered restaurants?
  • February

Most of the boats are still out of the water, so your fishing opportunities will be limited to the shoreline. Fear not, though, the tranquility of the town will allow you to be at peace with yourself along the stunning beaches.
  • March

Some hardy captains may take you out during March but the fishing still hasn't hit its stride. Warm-up for the season with some Tautog fishing if you're lucky. The feeling of getting on the water once more is fantastic.
  • April

As the season gets underway, it's time to discover the rich inshore waters of Delaware's Atlantic coast. Test your bottom fishing skills and land some delicious Tautog and Weakfish or battle it out with Bluefish.
  • May

As the weather heats up, so does the fishing. It's still inshore season, so go after a range of tasty creatures to fill the freezer. From Flounder to Seabass, there's no end to what you can catch.
  • June

Offshore season starts picking up in June giving you the chance to decide where you want to fish. Stripers join the inshore party, while monster Tuna inhabit the deeper waters. Get your fish on and fill the boat!
  • July

The tourists flock to Bethany Beach in July, and for good reason too. White and Blue Marlin make their way past Delaware's coast, offering some of the best fishing opportunities in the Atlantic.
  • August

The whole family is welcome aboard for an inshore fishing experience, with plenty of smaller, delicious fish on offer in the bays. Avid anglers can take advantage of the offshore waters too, with the fishing better than ever.
  • September

As the tourist season draws to a close, it doesn't feel like the fishing is winding down anytime soon. The remaining few pelagics may pass by in the deep, while delicious Seabass, Trout, and Flounder populate the coast.
  • October

It may be your last chance of the year to get on the water, so make the most of it. Inshore fishing reigns supreme, so anglers of all levels are invited on a charter out of Bethany Beach to test your fishing skills.
  • November

While the fishing may be great, the conditions aren't ideal for going out to sea. If you find a captain brave enough to head out, then target Seabass, Rockfish, and Tautog for a productive day out.
  • December

After a successful season of fishing in Bethany Beach's rich waters, it's time to put your feet up. Enjoy the holiday season with those close to you and make sure to put some fishing gear on your wish list!
