Fishing in Boca Grande

In the “Tarpon Capital of the World” – Boca Grande, fishing charters are eager to take you on a quest for the majestic “Silver King.” Blessed with rich wildlife and breathtaking scenery, the party doesn’t stop there. With the productive waters of the Gulf of Mexico at your fingertips, as well as luscious mangrove forests and prolific backcountry, this is a fishery with something for everyone.

While Tarpon fishing in the Boca Grande Pass is the main reason to visit, this charming town can cater to any angler. Closer to shore, you’ll find Snook, Redfish, Trout, and Pompano hiding in the flats and mangroves. For some more action, head a little further to the reefs and wrecks to bottom fish for Red Snapper, Grouper, King Mackerel, as well as target the time-honored Florida favorite – Cobia.

With a variety of trips on offer, you’ll find that everything you need can be accommodated. Trips range anywhere from four to over ten hours, so you can make your choice depending on how much time you have. You’ll find a number of trips specifically targeting the Silver King, but also specialized trips for Goliath Grouper and Sharks for those of you looking for an adrenaline rush.

Setting foot in Boca Grande, you’ll find fishing charters anywhere you turn. Head down to Whidden’s Marina or the Boca Grande Bayou where most of them are located, waiting to take you on a special fishing adventure!

Rules & Regulations

If you’re exploring this productive fishery on a charter boat, you don’t need to worry about a fishing license, as it comes included in the trip. Seeing as Tarpon fishing is done for the thrill and the sporting aspect of it, there are strict regulations on catching and releasing them. To make sure you’re fishing legally, book a trip with a reputable captain, and he’ll update you on all other bag and size limits.

Boca Grande Fishing Seasons

January

This is a very nice time to be fishing the backcountry because the fish have started moving into the warmer waters in earnest.

February

Snook and Redfish inhabit many of the same areas this time of year, and poling along the flats can be especially rewarding.

March

By the end of March, the water temperature should warm up to around 75–80°F. This means better bait, as well as more game fish.

April

The start of the Silver King season! Thousands upon thousands of Tarpon migrate to these waters to breed, and some will stay through November.

May

Probably the best time to be fly fishing during the entire year. Fly fishing for Tarpon is no small feat, so make sure to have a captain who knows his stuff.

June

Things may vary from year to year, but June is usually the peak of Silver King season. The Boca Grande Pass is absolutely packed with anglers having fun.

July

The weather starts being hot and humid, and it’s a good idea to go a bit further out to bottom fish at the reefs and wrecks.

August

While this is a great time to catch plenty of fish, it’s also incredibly hot. Probably the best time for Snook during the entire year.

September

Some may think it’s too late to be fishing for the Silver King, but they are sorely mistaken. Waters around the pass are great, and it’s cheaper now.

October

Around the start of the month, the tides start getting lower and lower, making for a great chance to do some sight fishing for Cobia.

November

November is usually when winter starts in earnest, but that doesn’t seem to bother the Redfish one bit, which is great as Snook start moving out.

December

At this time of year, shrimp is your live bait of choice, and you can catch some big and delicious Pompano with it before the end of the year.

Go with a captain. Be prepared for rain, sun, wind and possibly rough conditions. It is outdoor activity on the water. It is a roller coaster ride, enjoy the adventure.

Be ready to have fun and if you burn easy, bring sunscreen, ha. Listen to Captain Taylor and you will have a blast and feel like you're a natural at catching fish when your trip is done. This was my wifes first time fishing and she had a blast every minute on and off the boat.
