Fishing in Bonita Springs

Bonita Springs is located on the southern end of the Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve. With miles of shoreline and mangrove forests, the bay is a prolific inshore fishery. Add easy access to several nearshore and offshore reefs, and you’ll begin to see why Bonita Springs fishing charters offer so much variety!

Estero Bay provides a year-round home for many exciting inshore species. The lush mangrove forests serve as a hatchery for Snook and hold a population of resident juvenile Tarpon. In addition to these, you’ll also hook into other inshore favorites such as Redfish, Sheepshead, Mangrove Snapper, Spotted Seatrout, Jack Crevalle, and more.

Inshore fishing, however, is just one part of what Bonita Springs has to offer. Stillwater enthusiasts will be pleased to know that you can fish for Peacock and Largemouth Bass if you explore the freshwater canals. These trips are a great option for windy days.

Those looking for more of a challenge may want to hit some of the nearshore reefs and wrecks. Along the reefs, you can find delicious Tripletail, Grouper, and Snapper, as well as tough-fighting Sharks, Barracuda, and Cobia.

Half day trips will allow anglers to get a great taste of the inshore waters. You’ll usually fish the Estero Bay or the brackish Imperial River, making these trips perfect for families or beginners. If you’re interested in fishing the deeper waters, setting aside a few extra hours will give you time to hit the M.A.Y. and GH reefs.

Rules & Regulations

If you’re fishing aboard a saltwater fishing charter, you won’t need a fishing license, but anglers above the age of 16 will need one when targeting freshwater species. Many species are heavily regulated, so make sure to get informed on the current regulations before setting out.

Bonita Springs Fishing Seasons

January

The start of the year is a great time for Spotted Seatrout. Targeting Redfish can also be productive during this period. Pulling crab pots nearshore could put you on some Tripletail.

February

It’s still too cold for Snook to show up, but you can get plenty of Sheepshead this time of year, especially near Big Hickory Island.

March

This is when the waters will finally start to warm up, and they’ll usually be in the high sixties. Plenty of big Seatrout, Redfish, and Spanish Mackerel are yours to find.

April

April is when Snook arrive in large numbers, and it’ll stay that way right up until October. Guides will start doing Snook night trips around this time.

May

Around May, Tarpon might start showing up in local waters in bigger numbers. If so, do your best to hook the Silver King and experience the fight of a lifetime.

June

Summer is probably the best time to fish in Bonita Springs. The waters are filled with everything from Tarpon to Snapper, and you may find Sheepshead lurking around the passes.

July

The Snook bite is still running strong in the heat of summer. Fishing the nearshore reefs may hook you up with some Grouper and Snapper too.

August

If you’re lucky, there still might be some stubborn Tarpon that have stayed in the area, but even if that’s not the case, great fishing can still be had both inshore and offshore.

September

As the waters continue to cool, you can expect Redfish to show up in much larger numbers, while Sharks are making their way closer to inshore waters.

October

This is when fish start to migrate south for the winter, but it’s still a great time to target Redfish, Jack Crevalle, Trout, and more.

November

Early winter is when Tripletail and Cobia start popping up, so get ready to do some trolling for absolutely delicious fish.

December

Redfish and Trout are huge in the backwater, while you can find a good number of Grouper, Snapper, and Sheepshead over at the reefs.
