Fishing in Gulfport

Located between St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach, the charming beach town of Gulfport is a great place to get away from it all. Its marina is located in the aptly-named Clam Bayou, so it’s no surprise that there are plenty of Gulfport fishing charters to take you out! From the shallow waters of the Tampa Bay to the nearshore reefs, all the way to the Gulf of Mexico, there’s something for everyone here.

With so many fishing grounds come so many fish. The Tampa Bay is legendary among inshore anglers, and you can find delicious Mangrove Snapper, Spotted Seatrout, Sheepshead, and Flounder alongside tough-fighting Permit, Snook, Jack Crevalle, and Redfish. But the one species that makes this body of water such a hot spot is the “Silver King” – Tarpon.

If that wasn’t enough to whet your appetite, the nearshore reefs hold plenty of prized fish, too. Cobia, Amberjack, Groupers, Kingfish, and the prized Red Snapper can all be found just beyond the bay’s mouth. Venture a little further, and you could land yourself Mahi Mahi or Albacore. And, no matter where you are, there’s always the chance of a Shark biting!

Charters cater to all kinds of abilities and ages in Gulfport. Beginners and families can explore the Tampa Bay on a half day trip, while avid anglers can spend up to a full day on the water. Night trips are popular when Tarpon season hits, with trips upwards of six hours also common along the reefs. If you’re looking for an offshore adventure, you’ll want to set aside a full day.

Rules & Regulations

All the angling here takes place in saltwater, so heading out with a Gulfport fishing charter will mean that your license is covered. Your professional guide will also be up-to-date with the latest seasons and bag limits, so you’re sure to be fishing within the law.

Gulfport Fishing Seasons

January
It may not get too cold in these parts, but you’ll be glad of a warming meal after a day’s inshore fishing. Land Sheepshead, Bluefish, Tripletail, and more to grill up following a successful day out.
February
Redfish, Trout, and Pompano are some of the favored catches in winter in the Tampa Bay – that is if you can call it winter! Get ready for plenty of action with even more great rewards to take home.
March
Spring has sprung early, and new life is breathing fresh air all around the bay. Beware of the winds on certain days, but don’t miss out on the Redfish, Black Drum, Trout, and Snapper action.
April
Nearshore fishing starts picking up as a sign of things to come during peak season. Head to the reefs and go after Amberjack, Bonito, and Kingfish, while the favorites are all still biting inshore.
May
You can tell that peak season is here just by the number of boats out on the water. You’ll have a little more elbow room than in the heart of summer, but don’t forget to book early to make the most of it.
June
Red hot fishing everywhere! You won’t know where to look come June, with Tarpon offering the battle of a lifetime inshore, Red Snapper season opening up nearshore, and a very worthy supporting cast all over.
July
Another dimension to your fishing adventure opens up in July with the arrival of Mahi Mahi offshore. Take advantage of the longer days and brilliant sunshine to head offshore and land a real beast.
August
School’s out and there’s never been a better time to get your fish on. Bring the little ones to get hooked on inshore fishing, while the more keen among you still have options all the way out to the deep.
September
Snook, Permit, Jack Crevalle, Redfish, and Spotted Seatrout are all available in the rich waters of the Tampa Bay come September, so there’s no sign that the season is coming to an end just yet!
October
After a brief lull, the nearshore reefs are full up again, with Cobia, Amberjack, and Kingfish all on the cards. Don’t forget that fall can also be one of the best times of the year for inshore fishing!
November
Inshore fishing is still going strong, with Snook promising to put up a fight, while Trout and Redfish will provide for a tasty treat. Make the most of the last reef action of the year, too with a trip to the Gulf.
December
See out the year in style by landing yourself some delicious meat for the holidays. It may not be traditional, but Redfish, Trout, and Grouper are always popular options for a hearty, warming dinner.
