Fishing in Hollywood

Hollywood fishing is a dream come true for anglers looking for a fantastic fishery and gorgeous weather year round. This is South Florida, where both the inshore and the offshore bite is strong every season, and fishing opportunities are plentiful.

Enjoy the famous Hollywood Beach and nestle in the sand for a day of relaxation in the sun, or take a walk on the gorgeous Hollywood Beach Broadwalk rimmed by cafes and restaurants that have breathtaking sunsets on the menu. But before you do that, cast your line in the bountiful surrounding waters to catch your next trophy.

Fishing Spots

If you want to test your luck and skills in the Hollywood area, you will be amazed by the sheer number of spots you can go to for some serious rod bending action. The Intracoastal Waterway is the place to be if you’re looking for an inshore thrill. Anglers passionate about offshore adventures and deep sea fishing won’t be disappointed either, as there are many reefs and wrecks that you can explore.

Intracoastal Waterway

The countless inlets, bays, and estuaries of the Intracoastal Waterway are the playground of inshore Hollywood fish. This is a dream come true for all anglers who prefer to go fishing in calmer and shallower waters and still come home with an impressive catch. Underwater structures abound in these parts, and they make for the best grounds to target predatory species such as Snook, Redfish, Permit, Spanish Mackerel, and various types of Bass. Tarpon, aka the “Silver King,” calls these waters its kingdom. You can find this prehistoric monster in various sizes, but one thing is certain – they will give you a fishing battle to remember.

Reefs and Wrecks

One of the perks of fishing around Hollywood’s dozens of reefs and wrecks is that you don’t have to go far to chase the species that are on everyone’s wish list. Part of the natural Florida Reef lies in these waters, along with dozens of artificial reefs and wrecks. You’ll find the productive Broward Reef only a mile from the shore, where you can go after the all time favorites like Groupers, Snappers, big Amberjack, Barracuda, Cobia, and King Mackerel. The Hollywood Hallandale Reef is 2 miles out and it’s a diver’s paradise, as much as it is productive for fishermen.

The Gulf Stream

You only have to travel 1-2 miles offshore to get to the warm and productive Gulf Stream from the coast of Hollywood. One short, 15-minute boat ride is all it takes to put you on the hot trail of Blackfin and Skipjack Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Sailfish, Marlin, Swordfish, and different Shark species. This is what makes Hollywood’s fishery stand out – you don’t have to travel far to find prized game fish on your line, they’re virtually on your doorstep. Kite fishing, trolling, casting, and downrigger fishing are all popular techniques that could land you that personal record.

Fishing Tips

  • If you’re on the lookout for Tarpon and Snook, it would be wise to head out in the early morning or closer to sunset for best results.

  • Want to hook a monster Amberjack? Go further out, to deeper artificial reefs anywhere from January to July.

  • To have a productive hunt for Tarpon, drift fishing and trolling are your best options, and using pilchards, shrimp, and mullet is your safest bet.

  • Sailfish are the ultimate catch, and you want to come to Hollywood while they’re in season (November–May). The best technique that will score you a big one is kite fishing with live bait.

Need to Know

Hollywood fishing offers a lot of variety for both experienced seamen and beginner anglers still finding their sealegs. To maintain the abundance that this Florida fishery has to offer, it’s important to know and abide by the rules that maintain the fragile balance of these diverse ecosystems.

Regulations

If you’re going saltwater fishing in Florida, you don’t need to worry about getting a license – registered Hollywood fishing charters will handle it for you. Inshore fishing requires you to get a valid recreational freshwater license that usually costs around $17 (price subject to change). Depending on your preference, you can buy a three-day license, a one-year license, or even a lifetime license, if fishing is in your blood.

Weight limits and catch and release policies vary from species to species, but prized game fish  like Tarpon, Sailfish, and Marlin are always released. Limits on the number of fish you can keep can change every year, and that’s another thing to keep in mind and respect.

Budget

Not to much surprise, the prices of fishing charters in Hollywood fluctuate depending on what kind of fishing you want to do and how long you’d like to stay on the water. For offshore trips, you’re looking at prices that range from $1,100–$1,400, while specialized trips can be over $1,500, with food, drinks, and fishing equipment provided. There could be a small additional charge for live bait if you plan on using it. You can find inshore excursions at the price of $450 for a half day, and for full day trips the prices start at $500.

Getting There

Snuggled between Fort Lauderdale and Miami, which are amazing fisheries and tourist spots in their own right, Hollywood found its place among the greats. Located only 11 miles from Fort Lauderdale and 20 miles from Miami, this town is a wonderful option for everyone who wants to enjoy the beauty of the area without the hustle and bustle of tourists hubs. It will take about 20 minutes to get to Hollywood from Fort Lauderdale by car, and about half an hour from Miami. Public transport will get you there in about the same time.

Explore “Hollywood by the sea” to find new fishing horizons and don’t be surprised if this scenic town gets a special place in your heart.

Hollywood Fishing Seasons

In January, the waters are bit rougher and colder, but the bite is solid. Bottom fishing is productive for big Jacks, Mahi Mahi is active, and there’s a Sailfish here and there.

Fish are still in migration, but Mahi Mahi, King Mackerel, Bonito, and Sailfish are here. If you’re going after reef fish like Amberjack, Barracuda, and Almaco Jack, live bait is your best option.

As the temperatures are rising, so is the variety of fish you can hook around Hollywood. Mahi Mahi is a frequent catch, as well as Mutton Snapper, and Sharks aren’t shy either.

Spring brings more fishing choices, including Blackfin Tuna, King Mackerel, Jacks, and Cero Mackerel. This month is great to get out on the water and have a good time.

What a month to fish! Blackfin Tuna is still going strong in May, Sailfish bite is at its peak, and Jacks, King Mackerel, Snappers, and Mahi Mahi are abundant too.

The HFBA tournament takes place at the end of the month. Inshore you can hook Barracuda, Jack Crevalle, and Snook. Offshore, Bonito, King Mackerel, and Mahi Mahi are taking the spotlight.
Warm weather and waters are an excellent time to target Blackfin Tuna, while it’s still around. King Mackerel, Jacks, and Bonito are also in the cards, as well as Mahi Mahi.

Bottom fishing in August will grant you a healthy amount of Snappers and Groupers, as well as colossal Amberjack. In the inshore waters, Barracuda, Redfish, and Jack Crevalle are throwing a party.

Sharks are loving September, so you can expect Spinners and Hammerhead. The Sailfish bite is scattered, but you can find it, and you can also easily hook a massive King Mackerel.

Things are cooling down, but the fishing action is still hot. You’ll find Barracuda, Snook, Spanish Mackerel, and Jack Crevalle inshore, and some Sailfish, Bonito, and King Mackerel offshore.

In November, things are becoming a bit more unpredictable, but Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, and Skipjack Tuna are possible to find. King Mackerel is always in the game, and they come in impressive sizes.

Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish are popular inshore, and Barracuda are chomping live bait, as per usual. On the offshore front, there are no rules, Groupers, Snappers, and Mahi Mahi are all on the menu.
