Fishing in Treasure Island

With access to the prolific waters of the Gulf of Mexico, as well as the shallows of Tampa Bay, Treasure Island fishing charters can cater to any fisherman’s needs. White sandy beaches and picturesque views – this town has everything you need. Thanks to its location and the proximity of John’s Pass inlet, you’ll be fishing right out the dock!

There’s a lot of options to explore in the area, with a variety of species to target. You can stay closer to shore and reel in some King and Spanish Mackerel, Snook, Redfish, Cobia, Flounder, Speckled Trout, as well as Tarpon.

If you decide to explore the offshore waters, you’ll hit the reefs in search of some huge bottom dwellers. Prepare to battle Mangrove and Red Snapper, different species of Grouper, Jack Crevalle, Hogfish, and Amberjack. Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Wahoo, and Tuna are some of the pelagic species you can target in the summer months.

Half day trips are the best choice if you want to spend some quality family time, exploring the calm inshore waters. The biggest prize when it comes to inshore fishing has to be the Silver King – Tarpon, which you can target on a specialized trip. Book a full day trip to head out to the deep waters of the Gulf for a serious fishing adventure. In spring and fall, check out the annual Suncoast Kingfish Classic tournament, and enjoy a little healthy competition!

Treasure Island is surrounded by fishing towns, so there are charters leaving from different marinas in the area. Check out what’s most convenient for you, bring some sunscreen, and you’re guaranteed a great time!

Rules & Regulations

If you’re booking a charter out of Treasure Island, a saltwater fishing license will be provided by the captain. Note that if you’re targeting Tarpon, there’s a strict catch-and-release policy.

Treasure Island Fishing Seasons

January

In the winter, bottom fishing is the way to go. Head over to the wrecks and reefs to catch some tasty Snapper, Grouper, and Seabass, or stay inshore to target Speckled Trout and Redfish.

February

There’s still a lot to target around the reefs and wrecks, as long as the weather allows it. Flounder, Sheepshead, and Speckled Trout are some of the species you’ll find inshore.

March

Some of the larger species start to appear with the first signs of spring. Cobia, Kingfish, or even Tuna might end up biting. You can still target inshore and nearshore species.

April

If you hit the wrecks and reefs, you’ll find Seabass, Porgy, and Grouper. Trolling offshore will give you a chance to catch Kingfish and Tuna. Inshore, you’ll start to notice more Redfish and possibly Snook.

May

May is when the fishing gets even more interesting, with the Tarpon season opening. You’ll get the chance to reel in your own trophy Silver King, along with Snook, Redfish, and Trout.

June

Tarpon fishing gets really heated in June, while Snook might be limited to catch and release, but still a lot of fun. You might head out and target Gag Grouper and Red Snapper as well.

July

Inshore fishing is still in full swing, with a variety of tasty Snapper and Grouper biting. Big game fish like Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and Sailfish are all likely catches when it comes to offshore fishing.

August

These waters are prolific at this time of year, wherever you might choose to go. Tarpon season is over, but a lot of other inshore species like Redfish and Trout are ready to provide you with a good fight.

September

When it comes to bottom fishing, you can hit the wrecks and reefs and still come back with a load of fish. Deep sea fishing season is slowing down, but you’re still able to catch Mahi Mahi and Tuna, as well as Wahoo and Sailfish.

October

Offshore fishing will provide you with plenty of King and Spanish Mackerel, while big game fish like Sailfish and Tuna are rare. However, inshore you’ll find a lot of tasty fish like Flounder and Gag Grouper.

November

Since deep sea fishing isn’t as prolific, it’s the best time to check out nearshore and inshore charters. There’s a variety of species biting, with Seabass, Grouper, Snapper, Redfish, and Sheepshead at the top of the list.

December

The best thing about deep sea fishing coming to a halt in December is that you can hit the reefs for tasty bottom dwellers. You can head over to Tampa Bay and catch Flounder, Speckled Trout, and other prized inshore species.
