Fishing in Scarborough

It might not be the famous “Scarborough fair” from the old songs, but Scarborough’s fishing scene is something definitely worth talking about. If you’re looking for a place that offers great fishing diversity but isn’t too crowded, then this little town in the south of Maine is right up your alley.

With the Scarborough and Nonesuch Rivers on one side and the abundant Atlantic Ocean on the other, it’s not hard to figure out why Scarborough is an excellent angling destination. From May–October, you can hit the inshore water and fish for Striped Bass and Bluefish. There are also a lot of streams and creeks where you can hook a nice Trout or Smallmouth Bass.

If you prefer ocean fishing, then summer is the best time to stop by Scarborough. For passionate bottom anglers, Pollock, Haddock, and Cod are very popular catches here. Bluefin Tuna make their appearance in June, and for the next couple of months, you can chase them in the bluewater. Shark fishing is also popular, so anything from Thresher to Porbeagle is in the cards.

There are plenty of Scarborough fishing charters to choose from, and a lot of them offer specialized trips, so you can take your pick in what you’d like to target. Inshore jaunts are fun if you’re coming with kids, and full day trips allow you to go for your daily limit. Tuna expeditions can last 10 or more hours and are reserved for more experienced anglers.

You’ll probably meet your guide close to Town Landing or the Boat Launch on the Nonesuch River. From there, your Scarborough fishing trip can begin, and chances are, it will be a memorable one!

Scarborough Fishing Seasons

January

In January, the weather isn’t very forgiving and it’s freezing outside. Since the fish are not very active, we recommend staying indoors and waiting for warmer days to fish.

February

What can we say, it’s still very cold outside. There’s not much to do fishing-wise unless you decide to take a vacation to Florida.

March

Slowly, but surely, it’s getting warmer outside, but the fishing season in Scarborough won’t start for another couple of months. Soon, some of the creeks and streams might be open for some light fishing action.

April

Come April, local anglers are paying a lot of attention to the weather reports and fishing conditions. Towards the end of the month, you could go to the creeks and reservoirs to target some Bass and Trout.

May
Fishing opportunities are looking up! Young Striped Bass are finding their way to the Scarborough River, Brook Trout and Bass are biting, and you can even find some Mackerel later in the month.

June

In June, the fishing fun is in full swing! Ocean fishing is picking up, and you can go after all your favorite bottom-dwellers this month. You can also find some good-sized Stripers in the river.

July

Always wanted to catch a gorgeous Bluefin Tuna? This might be your month. Tuna are in the Scarborough offshore waters, and you never know how big your catch could be. Going after Bluefish is also very popular and productive in July.

August

Whether it’s bottom fishing, inshore action, or Tuna adventure, in August, you can do it all! Cod, Haddock, and Pollock are there for the taking, as are Bluefish and big Stripers in the inshore waters.

September

The bite is still good on all fronts, and if you’d like to shake things up a little, Shark fishing is something you should try. Alternatively, you can still catch lunker Stripers in the first half of the month, and Tuna are also slowly taking their leave.

October

Fishing endeavors in Scarborough are slowly coming to an end for the year. If Lady Luck is on your side, you can find a beautiful day to do some bottom fishing or target Largemouth Bass in the nearby lakes.

November

The weather is no joke in November, so fishing is pretty much out of the question until next spring. Do a maintenance check on your fishing gear, and put it aside for the time being.

December
Enjoy your holidays, get some rest, and look forward to next year’s fishing season.
