Fishing in Detroit

If you’re planning to go fishing in Detroit, you’re in for a treat. Famed for its auto industry, you'll be surprised to find that this city has plenty to offer in terms of fishing as well. With plenty of guides and productive spots to choose from, you’ll be able to enjoy a fun day of fishing, and catch yourself a delicious meal for the day!

You can target a wide range of species, including Walleye, Musky, Pike, Yellow Perch, Smallmouth Bass, and Rainbow Trout. Sturgeon inhabit the Detroit River, and you can even find some Chinook, Coho, and Atlantic Salmon in Lake Erie.

Local guides offer trips tailored to all types of anglers. If you’re just getting started, a half day is a great way to get introduced to the water. You’ll spend 4–5 hours fishing, giving plenty of time to snag yourself some savory fish. Longer trips are recommended for more seasoned anglers that want to maximize their time on the water and cover more fishing grounds.

You’ll have the chance to explore multiple rivers and lakes out of Detroit. On the city’s namesake river, Dingell Park is a great launching point with access to both Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair. The Rogue River is also a great fishing creek, stocked with smaller fish, making it a great spot for kids. With all these options and more, you’ve got to check it out for yourself!

Rules & Regulations

All anglers above the age of 17 must have a valid fishing license. If you’re targeting Sturgeon, you must register your harvest within 24 hours. Many popular species have both size and bag limits, so it’s always best to stay up to date on the latest regulations. If you’re not sure about something, you can always ask your experienced guide for help.

Detroit Fishing Seasons

January

Fishing in January can be tough due to the weather, so be sure to check the forecast and plan accordingly. This month, you can expect to target Sturgeon on the Detroit River or Yellow Perch on Lake Erie.

February

Steelhead presents an excellent challenge for those looking to test their skills. You may also encounter some Pike and Musky on longer trips. Now is a good time to head down to Grosse Ile to target Yellow Perch as well.

March

Walleye fishing starts to pick up, especially around Peche Island and Belle Isle. Sturgeon fishing is also solid along other parts of the Detroit River. On Lake Erie, you can target Northern Pike and Yellow Perch.

April

Head up to Lake St. Clair and go after Walleye and Largemouth Bass. Other potential targets this month include Rainbow Trout, White Bass, Yellow Perch, and Northern Pike.

May

White Bass fishing starts to really heat up. Both Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair are on fire, so either option should produce some great results. Walleye and Pike fishing are also superb this time of year.
