Fishing in Muskegon

Hop on a Muskegon fishing charter and get your last fill of river fishing before the waters empty out into the Great Lakes. This freshwater fishing hotspot is surrounded by Lake Michigan and plenty of inland streams, but it's the productive Muskegon River that brings in anglers from all over the world.

Whether it's big game freshwater fishing you're after or sight casting with a fly, the Muskegon River delivers. Come for the fall and spring Steelhead run and hook into the hard-fighting 'silver bullet.' Chinook Salmon fishing hits its peak in October and you're looking at hitting your limits with ease. There's also a healthy supply of Brown, Rainbow, and Lake Trout year-round to keep things exciting.

If you're in town during Steelhead or Chinook Salmon season, and have the time to spare, opt for a full day trip to get the most out of your experience. For a leisurely day of sight casting for Trout, a half day trip can be just as productive.

Most fishing charters launch out of the Port of Muskegon. There are ramps in Jackson Hills, North Muskegon, and Muskegon State Park to accommodate anglers coming in from all different areas.

Rules & Regulations

All anglers 17 and older need to purchase a fishing license online or from a licensed DNR agent. Check up on bag limits and seasonality before heading out to ensure you're fishing lawfully and to avoid disappointment.

Muskegon Fishing Seasons

  • January

Anglers looking for productive fishing without the crowds, should brave the cold. You can still hook into Steelhead and there's plenty of Brown and Rainbow Trout to keep things interesting.

  • February

Go after the last of the fall Steelhead during this typically quiet time on the Muskegon River. There's also a variety of Trout on offer to keep both spinning and fly fishing enthusiasts happy.

  • March

The weather warms up and the crowds start to trickle in, as spring Steelhead fishing kicks off. It'll only get better as the month goes on, so put your angling skills to the test!

  • April

The Steelhead migration is in full swing and these fighting fish put on a great show as they jump out of the water. This is one of your last chances to hook the silver bullet before it heads into Lake Michigan.

  • May

Watch the River's wildlife come alive as the waters warm up and the fish come out to play. You still have an excellent shot at Steelhead and Bass fishing starts to heat up too!

  • June

Smallmouth Bass fishing is on fire and fly fishermen will definitely want to get out and trick some fish onto their flies! There's plenty of Trout and Northern Pike to go up against as well.

  • July

The waters are warm and the weather is beautiful, creating ideal conditions for fishing! Get out and explore this productive stretch of river for Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, and a variety of Trout.

  • August

The usual suspects are still hungry for the bait. This is also a great time to take advantage of the weather and head out for some night fishing in an attempt to hook the nomadic Walleye!

  • September

This is one of the most popular times for fishing in the Muskegon Rive! Big Chinook Salmon make their way south to spawn before swimming off into the Great Lakes. Book early to avoid disappointment!

  • October

It's peak Chinook Salmon fishing season and your last chance at hooking the delicious pink-fleshed fish until next year! Come the end of the month, Steelhead join in, making for some of the best fishing around.

  • November

Just when you thought the fishing was slowing down, Steelhead makes its fall run. This is one of the most exciting times for fishing in the Muskegon River and you're looking at serious rod-bending action!

  • December

As the holiday season kicks off, the number of charters heading out drops considerably. If you can find a captain willing to take you out, don't miss out on another month of fantastic Steelhead fishing!
