Fishing in Kitty Hawk

Kitty Hawk fishing charters offer a range of trips to suit any angler. Fill the boat with delicious fish in the sounds or test your skills against pelagic monsters offshore. Either way, you’ll have a seasoned, local captain at the helm to make sure your trip is a success.

Inshore charters are great no matter your experience. Explore the Albemarle Sound in search of Largemouth Bass, Flounder, Drum, and Weakfish. You can also find Striped Bass in winter and huge Bull Red Drum in spring and fall. Beginners can learn the ropes on calm waters while keen anglers take on photo-worthy game fish.

Heading into the ocean, nearshore trips explore reefs and wrecks in search of Amberjack, Grouper, Seabass, and more. If you want a challenge, you can troll for Kingfish in fall or chum for Cobia in spring. Whenever you fish, you can expect a ton of tasty fillets on these beginner-friendly trips.

When most people think of fishing in the OBX, they think of deep sea fishing – and with good reason! The Gulf Stream draws huge Tuna, Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and more past Kitty Hawk each summer. In winter, you can even catch the ultimate deep sea delicacy: Bluefin Tuna. This is serious sportfishing, and you need to know your way around a rod to stand a chance.

Kitty Hawk fishing charters have something for everyone. Whether you’re reeling in your first fish in the sheltered sounds or taking on apex predators on the high seas, you’ll end the day with some delicious fish and unforgettable memories. That’s what the Outer Banks are all about!

Rules & Regulations

Fishing licenses are included on charters in North Carolina. Flounder, Cobia, and Seabass have seasonal closures which may change yearly. Ask your captain for the most up to date information on seasons and limits.

Kitty Hawk Fishing Seasons

January

Most captains will take the opportunity in January to fix up their boats before the season kicks in. You may find a couple of days of good weather, giving you the chance to fill up on inshore beauties.

February
With the offshore waters still providing a challenge for even the most experienced captains, fishing the sounds is your best bet in winter. From Flounder to Striped Bass, there’s plenty on offer.
March
The season is almost upon Kitty Hawk and some early birds will make their way out on the water. Exciting and delicious Tuna make their way along the Gulf Stream, giving you the chance to head offshore too.
April
There’s no doubt that it’s time to go fishing when April kicks in. Everything is possible as the waters and the fishing both start heating up. Inshore, surf, or offshore – get ready for a thrilling day on the water.
May
Before the peak tourist season hits, you’ll get to take advantage of red-hot fishing on relatively empty waters. Mahi Mahi join the offshore party and the “Drum run” kicks off inshore, giving you plenty to target.
June
Book early to avoid disappointment, as the whole of the Outer Banks comes alive in June. Some of the best fishing of the year is upon you, with Marlin starting to arrive offshore, and the usual suspects still inshore.
July
Billfish is the name of the game as summer hits its peak. Both Blue and White Marlin give you the chance to land the catch of a lifetime, while delicious Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and exciting Wahoo are more than worthy bycatch.
August
Take your pick of the wealth of fishing on offer out of Kitty Hawk in August, as the inshore sounds are overflowing with delicious fish, the nearshore fishing is in its prime, and the offshore bite has never been better.
September
There’s no sign of the fishing coming to an end, even if the tourists start making their way out. Come in September and make the most of the productive fishing without having to pay top dollar.
October
Make the most of the end of the official season and get out on the water as much as you can to fill the boat. You’ll still have the chance to hit up a range of different fishing grounds before the bad weather comes in.
November
As the weather changes, you’ll rely on the inshore fishing to keep you entertained. The rich sounds are as full as ever, with Bass, Flounder, Drum, and Trout biting at your line for a thrilling day out.
December
As the year draws to a close, so does the fishing. You’ll be very lucky to find a captain to take you out in December, so put your feet up and enjoy the holidays and conserve your energy for next year’s fishing.
